FALL 2021
In this e-bulletin you will find information about upcoming Psychiatry events in our community, national conferences, podcasts, webinars, fellowship and scholarship opportunities, and more!
PSYCHIATRY STUDENT INTEREST GROUP NETWORK
The Psychiatry Student Interest Group Network (PsychSIGN) is a national network of medical students interested in psychiatry, from those with an early interest in the brain and mind to those already in the residency application and match process. PsychSIGN is comprised of psychiatry interest groups at medical schools across the country. Member schools are divided into regions depending on the school’s location. Each school is headed by a Region Chair elected by PsychSIGN members at the national convention. (UMN is in Region 4.) Regions get together for the region conference annually and are kept up to date with National PsychSIGN and the APA through newsletters and monthly updates. There are no membership costs for the schools in PsychSIGN and the events held are also open to the students at no cost. Join PsychSIGN for free today!

Meet the New Graduate Learners in Psychiatry
Every year, the National Resident Match Program’s Match Day has an enormous impact on students throughout the country who are looking to further their medical education. This year on March 31, 33,535 first-year resident program matches were made. Nine of those matches were made with the U of M’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Our new residents include Jeremiah Atkinson, MD; Jonas Attilus, MD, MPH; Hamed Ekhtiari, MD, PhD; Jamie Fyda, MD; Hasti Hadizadeh, MD; Eric Leppink, BA; Christian Morfaw, MD; Caitlin Raasch, BA; and Masoud Salehi, MD. They started their journeys in June. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences published three articles introducing our new residents (Article One, Article Two, Article Three).
Newest faculty member brings wealth of experience in medical education and working with underserved communities
M. Philip (Phil) Luber, MD, joined the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, April 30, on the academic side. He will begin providing clinical services as part of the Coordinated Care Psychiatric Service in primary care clinics in early August 2021.
Dr. Luber had already been partnering with the department as a consultant, helping provide faculty development courses and working on education program development. “In my faculty development courses, I work with them on doing a better job supervising our learners in the clinical setting,” he said. “We explore techniques they can use to effectively supervise and teach the next generation of physicians, even when they’re really busy.”
Dr. Luber will be working with 4th year medical students as a part of the ADPY 7535 Advanced Clinical Practices of Psychiatry course.
Learn more about Dr. Luber in the article linked here.

NAMI Walk Minnesota
Saturday, September 25, 2021, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. CST
Minnehaha Park, Minneapolis AND Anywhere!
Participate in NAMIWalks Minnesota at your own location and online
We are planning to hold the 15th NAMIWalks Minnesota (at least partially) in-person at Minnehaha Falls. As infection rates go down and the CDC continues to release updated guidelines for large gatherings, we are taking actions towards an in-person event.
Our online event proved to be flexible and popular, and was accessible for many people who can’t make it to the park, so we will continue to have an online version of the event this year, and will also provide support for smaller personal events on Walk Day. For updates, please register here.

NATIONAL CONFERENCES, SYMPOSIUMS & WEBINARS
American Association of Directors of Psychiatry Residency Training (AADPRT) Annual Meeting
March 8-12, 2022
Hilton Minneapolis
Conference Theme: Changing Self and Systems: Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in Residency Training
The COVID pandemic has disrupted everything, imposed great burdens on our patients, learners, and faculty, and exposed deep racial disparities in our institutions and society. These are difficult times. AADPRT’s 2022 Annual meeting has two principle aims – to advance anti-racism and allyship in residency training and to re-connect our community.
Being an effective cross-racial ally requires knowing thy self as a racial being as well as developing the capacity for nuanced conversations about race and racism. The program will help us as educators to ‘see, be, and do’ anti-racism. At the same time, we will leverage our amazing community to help each other adapt to and manage the challenges of the ‘new normal’, including how we promote passion and calling (professional identity development), navigate the role of remote technology in supervision, teaching and clinical care, and develop a growth mindset in our assessment programs.

Association of Academic Psychiatry (AAP) 2021 Annual Meeting
Embassy Suites Denver Downtown, Denver, CO
AAP’s Annual Meeting is designed for psychiatrists who are interested in learning about academic development, teaching psychiatry, and research on psychiatry education. The meeting is filled with interactive workshops designed to teach a wide array of academic topics. “How To” sessions teach academic and leadership development, use of technology in teaching, resident and faculty teacher development, and a host of other topics in resident and medical student education. The meeting is a wonderful way to interact with academic psychiatrists and psychiatry leaders in a casual and inviting setting filled with accessible workshops, informal sharing, and academic mentoring. It is an ideal venue for residents and fellows to develop an interest in education, junior faculty to launch an education-based career, and senior faculty to expand their skills and meet colleagues from across the country.
Theme: "Bridging the Divide: Reducing Inequity Through Education"
Mental health is an integral part of overall health and is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Inequity and disparities impact the health of our patients and the population as a whole. As AAP educators we teach a variety of topics in psychiatry to a wide range of learners--undergraduate and medical students; residents and fellows; faculty and mental health providers; patients and communities. Topics include mental health care, mental health promotion, as well as advocacy, and leadership. The breadth of issues and learners we encounter allows us a unique opportunity to raise awareness of inequity in medical education and mental health and in doing so, be part of the needed change to improve health and promote wellness at the individual and societal levels.
We are thrilled to be back in Denver! AAP is a wonderful place to meet new colleagues who share a passion for education. Workshops showcase innovative educational strategies in teaching and career development. Come enjoy the metropolitan city of Denver with its incredible views of the water and the mountains! I hope to see you there!
