Weekly Recap
Hopefully this message finds you in good spirits. This was an exciting week back after the Thanksgiving break. Teachers and scholars benefited from Kagan coaching on Monday (increases scholar engagement). Family Fitness Night was an exciting time with some fun, challenging activities that caused us all to consider our health and physical fitness, and we concluded with a healthy, light meal. Scholars took part in various instructional activities throughout the week, and we concluded the week with our individual House and Full House meetings. Congratulations to Isibindi on leading in House points. A huge thank you to our scholars and all who donated on their behalf for the Kids Heart Challenge. Collectively, we raised $2000. These funds will benefit a worthy cause.
This month's Report to Parents, "Helping Children Cope with Tragedy", provided by NAESP offers families tips for how to help their child cope in the wake of a disaster or tragic event. Young children shouldn’t have to learn about tragic events, but they do. Some are exposed to disasters firsthand, as victims. Others discover the tragedies by watching the news or overhearing adults or other children discussing the events. It is a sad fact that all children need to know how to deal with tragic events—and their parents and caregivers need to know how to help them cope. If your child is the victim of a disaster:
- Try to stay calm.
- Explain, but don't provide unnecessary details.
- Make time to talk to your children.
- Get counseling.
If your child is aware of a tragic event:
- Limit TV coverage.
- Be extra comforting.
- Watch for behavior changes.
- Make sure they know that there are people in charge who are helping.
- Do something for others.
Additional information that elaborates on each point can be accessed by clicking on this link http://www.naesp.org/sites/default/files/RtP_Tragedy_English.pdf, and the Spanish version is available via this link http://www.naesp.org/sites/default/files/RtP_Tragedy_Spanish.pdf.
This week, we will recognize the 70th day of school on Monday. Scholars are welcome to dress in 1970s attire. Scholars will have a chance to visit the Penguin Patch throughout the week to purchase items that can be gifted to family/friends or things they would like to keep for themselves. Our Annual Spelling Bee is scheduled for Thursday at 9:00 a.m., so come on out to support our scholars who will participate.
When wondering about key dates, be sure to review The Lake Ridge Bridge and the calendar located on the campus's website. As events are scheduled, dates are updated so that you can have a place to reference.
Read the information located on below in the newsletter to learn about campus/district happenings, important reminders, news from APD and PTA, and upcoming events. Always remember that "The Race for Excellence has No Finish Line."

Attendance Reminders
- Notes regarding an absence must be brought to the office within three days of the absence; parents can also enter via Parent Access. Notes should include the scholar's full name, date of absence, and signature/date of parent/guardian.
- You can email Mrs. Cazares, Attendance Clerk/Registrar, at nancy.cazares@chisd.net for any attendance questions or concerns.
- If the method of your child getting home needs to change, notify the Main Office or your child’s teacher by 2:30 p.m. so that there is enough time to communicate the change to your child. If e-mailing the teacher, include an administrator in case the teacher is absent on that particular day.
- 2:45 p.m. is the latest that a scholar may be checked out due to preparation for dismissal.
