6th Grade Outdoor School Day Trip
Recently, Northwest Regional Educational Service District (NWRESD) reached out to offer us a hybrid Outdoor School experience for our 6th-grade students this year. In this hybrid Outdoor School model, students will:
Attend multiple days and nights at an away camp in the Spring.
The plan for the SMS spring experience is for three days and two nights away at camp.
Attend one day off-campus but near to school for outdoor science instruction in Autumn.
Our autumn Outdoor School experience will take place on one day during the week of October 18th.
Students will be assigned to participate in this experience on either the 18th, 19th, or 21st. We are currently working to identify the specific date that each student will be able to attend.
The upcoming ODS day trip will consist of students arriving at SMS in the morning, then taking a field trip to a nearby location to attend sessions taught by Outdoor School staff members throughout the day, and then returning by the end of the school day.
Students will walk between the school and park with the Outdoor School staff and supporting SMS staff. If your student is unable to make this walk and is in need of transportation, please reach out to their Flight Time teacher so that we can coordinate an alternate means of getting to and from the park.
Please keep an eye out for more specific details in your email inbox and coming home with your 6th-grade students in the coming weeks. Due to the short notice and need for a quick turnaround time in order to make this happen, we have attached the Field Trip Permission form here so that you can print it off, sign it, and send it with your student to turn into their Flight Time teacher next week. We will also provide these forms directly to students next week.
If you are interested in being a parent volunteer to support these Outdoor School Experiences, please contact Parent Support Organization Volunteer Coordinator Lauren Halgren at lhalgren05@hotmail.com.
Chromebook Protection Plan: The $15.00 Chromebook protection plan must be purchased prior to October 15th to have protection for the 2021-2022 school year.
School Picture Retakes: If your student was unable to have his/her student photo taken or would like a retake, pictures will be retaken on October 22nd. For more information please visit ios.mydorian.com

Emergency Drills & Safety Information
Lockdown Drill: SMS will be conducting a lockdown drill on October 14, from 8:40 a.m.to approximately 9:00 a.m. Please be aware that if you need to drop off or pick-up a student during the drill, no one will be allowed to enter or exit the building until the drill is completed. Also, if you are in our school during this drill you will be asked to comply with the drill until its conclusion. These drills are held three times a year and help ensure that students and staff are clear what to do in an emergency situation. For more information on lockdown drills and other aspects of our Standard Response Protocol (SRP), please see the September 17 District Update, found here.
Great Oregon Shake-Out: Our district will participate in the “Great Oregon ShakeOut” earthquake drill on Thursday, October 21st at 10:21 a.m. Here is the link to the “Shake Out” web page, which provides valuable resources for students, staff and parents. Please keep this date and time in mind should you need to pick up or drop off your student.
SafeOregon Tip Line: The District is enrolled in the SafeOregon Tip Line program. The SafeOregon program allows students, staff, and members of the public to anonymously report harmful or potentially harmful behavior against other students, staff, or school site. There are five ways to report tips: online at www.safeoregon.com, call or text to 844-472-3367, email to tip@safeoregon.com or via the SafeOregon mobile app.
