Primary Smashin' Pumpkins Project
Creative Problem Solving
Supplies Request
Did you say punkin' chunkin'? Yes, you heard correctly! Second-grade students will be utilizing the engineering/design process to design a structure that will protect a pumpkin as it is dropped from the balcony of the SAGE Center. As students complete the project they will garner a deeper understanding of forces, as well as learn how velocity and acceleration from falling objects relates to a force on landing. This project will encourage students to take risks and try designs that may or may not work. Taking risks can feel uncomfortable, but this is how we grow as individuals.
Students will work in groups to construct their designs. Each team that week will need one pumpkin. 2nd grade will need 25 pumpkins to accommodate all 2nd graders. We are also in need of masking and duct tape, new or used pool noodles, as well as trash bags of various sizes.
