August and September Monthly Topics
Parents,
Hello! Here at school, we have been very busy learning about feelings and emotions - what they are and how we can recognize them in ourselves and
others. After we complete learning about feelings and emotions, we will focus on self-control. Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help your child continue to learn about the theme of feelings and self-control, through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! We have really enjoyed exploring these topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much!
Practice it!
Feelings and Emotions:
Practice identifying the feelings of others while you are watching a movie or TV show. As you are watching, talk about how each character feels and how you can tell. Encourage your child to use situational cues (what is happening) as well as physical cues (how the person looks).
Self Control:
Set out 3 small pieces of candy. Tell your child that they can have one piece now, two pieces in 15 minutes, or all 3 pieces in 30 minutes. Once the child makes their choice, talk about why they made the choice they did. If they chose to wait, ask your child if it was difficult for them to wait for the candy. Reflect on the benefits of self control.
Talk About It!
Feelings:
•How do you feel right now? How do you know?
•Do you think all feelings are okay to have? Why or why not?
•Is it easy or difficult for you to talk about how you are feeling? Why?
•Do you feel like you handle your feelings in a healthy way? Why or why not?
•Why do you think it’s important to know how you are feeling?
•Why do you think it’s important to know how others are feeling?
Self-control:
•What does self control mean and why do you think it’s important?
•Is self control easy or difficult for you? Why?
•Tell me about a time when you used self control.
•Tell me about a time when you didn’t use self control.
•How do you think using self control can help you in school?
•How do you think using self control can help you outside of school?
•How would your life look different if you used more self control?
Monthly Character Trait
Treating others the way I want to be treated. Being considerate and honoring the feelings, opinions, and property of others.
