The Whole Child Approach
At Churchill High School we pay attention to current educational practice and focus on how to reach all students in the best way possible. The demands of the 21st century require a new approach to education to fully prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. Research, practice, and common sense confirm that a whole child approach to education will develop and prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow by addressing students' comprehensive needs through the shared responsibility of students, families, schools, and communities. We aim to disrupt ineffective practices, and support student growth in a dynamic and ever-changing world, and prepare them for tomorrows challenges.
I firmly believe that all educators got into the profession because they wanted to improve the work they do for students, their families, and the community. Whether it's instruction, school climate, leadership, family engagement, or any of the other issues schools face on a daily basis, all educators need tools to help them improve their actions and methods. A whole child approach, ensures that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. This lens and approach to teaching children sets the standard for comprehensive, sustainable school improvement and provides for long-term student success.
As your child's principal and on behalf of the Churchill staff, we make three promises to you the family:
- We will keep your student safe.
- We will make your student feel special (meaningful connection to more than one adult).
- We will ensure that they learn.
Churchill's Whole Child approach is an effort to transition from a focus on narrowly defined academic achievement to one that promotes the long-term development and success of all children. We utilize resources to support our teachers as they educate the whole child. Some of the frameworks/systems that we use and focus on are: ASCD Whole Child Initiative, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID), Professional Learning Communities (PLC's), Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Restorative Justice, Instructional Frameworks from the Center for Educational Leadership, Culturally Responsive teaching practices, Socio-Emotional Learning, & Trauma Informed Care, just to name a few.
It takes a whole school effort to deliver a While Child learning model. We value and appreciate your commitment to your child's education. If you are interested in learning more about these systems and frameworks or would be interested in supporting the work we do for kids, you are welcome to join us at our Site Council meetings and be a part of our engaged Churchill Community.
Please know that I am always available and willing to engage with you in a conversation about our school improvement plan and how we plan to educate and promote your child to success beyond high school.

Students Ride Free on LTD
All students in kindergarten through 12th grade can now ride Lane Transit District (LTD) buses for free. For now, students can ride free if they show their school identification card or just tell the bus driver where they are a student. At a future point students will be required to show a pass or app to board the bus. Learn more: www.ltd.org/student-pass.

Katy McAuliffe - Thank you Katy for your diligence and hard work. The beginning of this year has been exceptionally flush with details, tasks, schedule changes, monitoring students progress, responding to emails, and simply breathing. Thank you for your constant and thoughtful approach to helping students and families. Your hard work at submitting thoughtful letters for students with their scholarship opportunities is not only time consuming, but deeply respectful to each individual student. You are a champion of champions.
Thank you, families! Churchill volunteers and families brought a beautiful spread of food for our staff to enjoy on grading day. It brightened our day. We are grateful for your commitment to our teachers!!
