2019/2020 HIV/STD Curriculum Opt Out Information

The opt-out policies for both HIV/AIDS Prevention and Human Growth/Development curricula have changed. Families are now required to opt out each child in their family every year...opt-outs are no longer "good for life" nor does an opt-out for one child "cover the whole family" as they have in the past. Parents will need to go online at to view the curriculum and opt-out their child/children online using the Google Form.

Aspire Highly Capable Learners, Testing Referrals

Aspire Program for Highly Capable Learners

Battle Ground Public Schools is accepting referrals to test students for its highly capable Aspire program. Referral packets are due by December 6, 2019. Aspire is designed for students in grades K-12 who perform or show potential for performing at significantly advanced academic levels as demonstrated by one or more of the multiple criteria specified by the state (WAC 392-127-035).

Testing takes place in January and February for grades 1-11 and March for kindergartners. Identified students will receive services beginning next school year, 2020-2021. Parents who submit the student referral packet by December 6 will be notified by mail of the time and dates testing will occur at their school. Referral packets are available at the child’s school office or on the BGSD website. For more information about the Aspire program, please contact (360) 885-5426.

McCann's Memos - words from our counselor

Parents of 7th and 8th graders,

I'd like to inform you about the College Bound Scholarship. This scholarship can cover up to 4 years tuition at almost any school in the state of Washington! It really is the simplest scholarship students can apply for.

If your student was eligible for Free or Reduced price lunch any time during their 7th or 8th grade year, then they are eligible to apply.

Applications and information fliers are available online at: You can apply online (click on "Apply Here!"), then print and sign the application. Ask your child if they received an application. I would like to have them returned by December 2nd. Have your student bring the signed form to Mrs. McCann and I will mail it in.

The College Bound Scholarship program is an early commitment of state financial aid to eligible students who sign up in middle school and fulfill the scholarship pledge. The scholarship is a state-funded program administered by the Washington Student Achievement Council.

Eligibility information:

Washington State 7th and 8th grade students may apply for College Bound if they meet one of the following requirements at ANY TIME DURING THEIR 7TH OR 8TH GRADE YEAR.:

    • During 7th or 8th grade, household income from all sources (taxable and nontaxable) is less than or equal to the amounts on the chart.

  • Student is currently in foster care or a dependent of the state.

Hello from the PVM office!

Chilly weather is just around the corner. It is always a good idea to look at your plans in case of a weather-related school delay or closure.

Inclement weather and emergency information:

BGPS sends out parent/guardian phone calls and emails to notify families of unplanned school closures. You may also call the BGPS information line for information on weather/emergency delays and closures.

Information Line: (360) 885-5343 (Updated by 6:00 a.m. on impacted days).

Please use the link below to visit our Weather/Emergency Closures page on the BGPS website for more detailed information about snow bus routes, school late-start times, how we keep you notified of weather or emergency closures, and more.

Weather/Emergency Closures

It is important that we have your current contact information in Skyward, as that is where our system draws data from in order to send out phone calls and emails.

Updating contact/emergency contact information:

Please be sure to update Skyward with any contact information changes. Paper forms sent home for "emergency early release" information are NOT used to update Skyward, that must be done online. Please complete the 2019/2020 Skyward Update if you have not already done so.

You can access the skyward log in page HERE.

Thank you!

We understand it can be very difficult to avoid taking your child out of school for part of a day for appointments, or missing a day due to illness. Students are more successful at school when they attend regularly. We encourage you to try to plan appointments or vacation to avoid being out of school as much as possible.

Important Attendance Information

* Absences must be excused by a parent/guardian within three (3) school days of returning from the absence. You may excuse absences by note, calling the office, skyward absence report, or email. The excuse should be dated, signed, and include the student first and last names, the date(s) of the absence, and reason for the absence.

* Absences for reasons not on the district-approved list must be arranged ahead of time and approved by the principal. Please email/call/send a note to the office at least two (2) days prior to the absence so we can help students avoid missing anything important. This would be for such things as vacation or out of town sports tournaments.

* Absences for illness that are five (5) days or more will require a doctor note upon return.

PVM absence reporting line is: 360-885-5512

Office phone is: 360-885-5500

The district handbook, with attendance and other important information, was sent home the first day of school, and can be found on the district website at:

Valid reasons for excused absences include:

* Participation in school approved activities or instructional program

* Illness, health conditions, or medical appointment

* Family emergencies

* Principal or designee and parent/legal guardian, or emancipated youth mutually agreed upon approved activity

* Observance of religious or cultural holidays

* Court, judicial proceeding, or serving on a jury

* Post-secondary, technical school or apprenticeship program visitation or scholarship interview

* Absences directly related to the student's homeless status

* Absences related to deployment activities of a parent or legal guardian

* State-recognized search and rescue activities consistent with RCW 28A.225.055

* Absences resulting from a disciplinary /corrective action

Every student at Pleasant Valley Middle School is known by name, strength, and need.
We believe ALL students can experience academic and personal growth.

Battle Ground School District Calendars 2019-2020 School Year

We love to have parents and guardians volunteer and come as chaperones on school outings. We do require a background check in order to work with or supervise students in the Battle Ground school district.

The application is online, though, we do need to get a copy of your driver's license at the school office in order to process the background check. Click the link below for more information and to apply.

Once approved, the clearance is good for two (2) years.

We encourage you to get cleared now, as the process can take 7 -10 days and is not always possible to complete in time if you wish to chaperone on a field trip with your child's class at the last minute. Thank you so much for spending time here helping at PVM!
