PBIS/SEL Parent Newsletter
G.E.S. April 2023
I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you had a wonderful spring break with your family. As we return to school, we want to remind you of the importance of self-control in your child's learning and development.
Spring break can be a time of indulgence and relaxation, and it's important to help your child transition back to their regular routines and expectations. Not only do students have to regroup after coming off of Spring Break, but they also are rightfully excited about Summer Break approaching. Encouraging self-control can help them stay focused on their learning, follow rules and guidelines, and make good decisions. Below, you will find tips on helping your child with self-control, as well as see how teachers will continue to emphasize it.
Tip #1 Boundaries
Set boundaries: Talk with your child about your expectations for their behavior and stick to them consistently. This can include things like limiting screen time, encouraging healthy eating habits, and establishing a regular bedtime.
At school - Teachers and administrators will review classroom and school-wide expectations. This includes being respectful in words and actions towards students and teachers, as well as completing classwork. There will also be an emphasis on responsibility and accountability for behaviors. Rewards and consequences will be reviewed with students.
Tip #2 Mindfulness
At school -
- We have daily conversations about self and social awareness as it relates in how we should appropriately engage and interact with each other.
- We emphasize the importance of self-control and self-management, an important life skill, whether it is for managing anger, time, worry, or restlessness. One of the things we teach is to recognize how we are feeling and the appropriate responses to it. We also teach the importance of taking short breaks to sometime stretch and move, and sometimes to get calm and breathe.
- Handouts from the Mindfulness Session at Steam Night, as well as some other helpful items are below. These are great for school and home!
