Up Ahead: Summer is in Full Swing
1. Gearing up for Summer School, Original Credit and ESY.
2. Please note that our Board of Education voted to allow 12 month employees to carry more than 42 days of vacation until 12/31/20. Typically, we cannot carry more than 42 days after the end of June. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Allen.
3. Friday June 19th, Juneteenth, Gov. Carney issued the following:
"As we move forward, I believe the least that each of us can do is commit to learning the lessons of our history. The good and the bad. That’s why on Friday, June 19, we will close State of Delaware offices in recognition of Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the United States. This holiday offers an opportunity to encourage open dialogue, and to recommit to treating one another with more respect."
Since, NCCVT had started working our 4 10 hour days, we were off on this day. In response to the declaration, honoring the day, and the hours worked that week, 12 month employees will have off on July 6th. This is a common practice when July 4th falls on a Friday. We recognize the day by giving the time off on another day. We believe the same practice applies here. We will put out a message to all 12 month employees this week.
Here is a fairly thorough article on Juneteenth with several links.
Take the Time to Climb: Principle -- Communication
This is incredibly important as we begin to prepare for the fall and what schooling looks like. This week Fairfax County Public Schools released a plan for reopening, which was immediately "revolted against" by teachers.
Going Beyond...
#NCCVTWorks for Equity in Action.
Our industry in Delaware is guided by the PSEL educational standards. Below is Standard # 5 which focuses on community, care, and support. Take a few minutes and read the statements that support what effective leaders do.
How well do we achieve those statements for our students?
STANDARD 5. COMMUNITY OF CARE AND SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS
Effective educational leaders strive for equity of educational opportunity and culturally responsive practices to promote each student’s academic success and well-being. Effective leaders:
a) Ensure that each student is treated fairly, respectfully, and with an understanding of each student’s culture and context.
b) Recognize, respect, and employ each student’s strengths, diversity, and culture as assets for teaching and learning.
c) Ensure that each student has equitable access to effective teachers, learning opportunities, academic and social support, and other resources necessary for success.
d) Develop student policies and address student misconduct in a positive, fair, and unbiased manner.
e) Confront and alter institutional biases of student marginalization, deficit-based schooling, and low expectations associated with race, class, culture and language, gender and sexual orientation, and disability or special status.
f) Promote the preparation of students to live productively in and contribute to the diverse cultural contexts of a global society.
g) Act with cultural competence and responsiveness in their interactions, decision making, and practice.
h) Address matters of equity and cultural responsiveness in all aspects of leadership.
