January 6, 2014
We have a lot going on this week and I look forward to getting back into the swing of things. If your child sees me for reading, he/she received information before winter vacation about RAZ Kids. It will be homework each week to read books on RAZ Kids. Your child can read books on RAZ Kids on a computer or iPad. I will be able to view what your child reads and how he/she does on quizzes. Remember that if your child takes a quiz on a RAZ Kids book, he/she will earn "AR" points. Most of the RAZ Kids books will be worth half a point. I will let each of the teachers know how many "points" your child earns each week.
If you haven't heard, our Little Free Library is now open in the school lobby. You can check out our website for more information. We hope the school district puts it in its permanent location soon!
Have a great week!
5th Grade Reading 1
6th Grade Reading
On Monday, we will have our Shopping Day for last quarter. On Tuesday, we will watch the iMovies that the students created at the end of second quarter about the famous person that they researched. On Wednesday we will read a story called "Giant Gingerbread House Sets Record." On Thursday and Friday, we will do Read Naturally.
1st Grade Reading
We will continue unit 5. This unit focuses on the glued sounds -am and -an. We will be working on using tapping for reading and spelling words with bonus letters. Our goal is to be charting the students’ fluency 2-3 times per week. Be sure to be working on the assigned probe each week. We will continue with fluency probes this quarter. We have moved on to different probes. This week's probe is 1.
6th Grade Writing
On Monday we will spend some time with adverbs and the students will share their Five Senses essay. The students will also receive their Catalina and five senses essays back. Some of the students lost points because their essays were late. We will spend a couple of days working on writing good introductions. On Friday, the students will do their first journal writing. The focus for this week will be to add adverbs to their journal entry. Each day we will continue to work with Four Level Grammar. This is a program that is being used throughout the school to immerse children in grammar. I have used this program for years and it is very effective and carries over to reading. We will spend 5-10 minutes a day on grammar.
