Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Evening Mayfield!

Congratulations on completing the first full week of school! Our students and staff are establishing routines and procedures while building great classroom communities. We are all learning from each other, and we look forward to continuing to learn because of the fantastic relationships that have been established during these first weeks of school.

The Mayfield Intermediate Administrative team, consisting of Mr. Moore, Mrs. Huntley, and me, have devoted time every day to visit every classroom and connect with the teachers and staff. We have been proud of what we have seen our teachers and students doing daily. Students are engaging in rigorous learning activities and acclimating to being back in the school building extremely well. We are excited to continue this process of visiting every classroom, every day, for the foreseeable future.

Always Learning!

Car Rider Line in the Morning

Safety is our top priority for our students and staff when they arrive at school. We have definitely noticed an increase in the number of students dropped off at school in the morning. Our school safety coordinator, school resource officer, and administration have developed a plan to help alleviate traffic congestion on Signal Hill Road.

We are implementing a two-lane car drop-off procedure to help get as many cars as possible in our front loop and ensure students get out of the car safely and quickly. We will have cones set up daily to highlight the two lanes. Please review the following steps to help us get all our students to school safely and efficiently.

Car Rider Line Arrival Process:

  1. As you enter the Mayfield loop, follow the direction of Mr. DeEmilio as he directs your car into lane 1 or lane 2
  2. Enter the front loop and pull up to the orange traffic cone (if you are the first car entering the loop) or directly behind the next car.
  3. Have your child exit the car, go directly to the sidewalk, and then walk to the front of the building.
  4. Once all vehicles in the front loop have exited their children, we will release the group of cars in the font loop by removing the orange cone in front of the line.
  5. The next group of cars will then enter the front loop and repeat steps 1-4.

Please remember that on rainy days, we expect even more car riders than on a typical day.

Social Emotional Learning at Mayfield Intermediate School

Not only are students building Social Contracts within their classes, but our students and staff have also been building classroom communities while supporting our students' social and emotional learning. This year our students are participating in activities that are helping them get to know their classmates and establish positive relationships that will lead to a better learning environment for everyone in their class. The teachers will be accessing the Sanford Harmony. Please take a moment to talk with your child about some of the activities that they have done this past week with their classmates. The program is delivered in 5 separate units. Students and teachers should complete the entire program between November and January.

Students Building Number Sense in Math Class

At Mayfield Intermediate School, our teachers build our students' number sense through engaging and exciting activities. These number sense routines challenge students to think about numbers differently, build reasoning and logic skills, and understand the "why" behind their computations. #MayfieldISProud

Daily Cleaning Procedures at Mayfield

Our school division recently purchased 40 UVC Towers to add to our inventory and routine for disinfection of classrooms and other spaces. Every evening custodian will be given one of these devices to pull alongside their carts as a disinfection measure instead of the electrostatic sprayers. The normal wipe down and cleaning of the space will take place; afterward, this device will be set up in the middle of the classroom and run for at least 5 minutes. This process will take place while the custodian is in the next room performing their duties in that space simultaneously. The device will be pulled behind them in this manner throughout their entire section until all rooms have been cleaned & disinfected. We are very excited that this device will allow us to disinfect a space without utilizing unnecessary chemicals.

Metz Middle School Sports Program for 6th Graders

6th graders can try out for sports at Metz. Tryouts for Girls Track, Volleyball, Cheerleading, Boys Soccer, and Football will begin on Wednesday, August 25, from 2:45-5 p.m. The athlete must have a completed VHSL physical on file to begin tryouts. Parents can find the physical form on the Metz website under athletics. All prospective athletes will also need the concussion form signed by their parents.

Transportation for 6th Grade Students Trying Out for Middle School Sports

For tryouts at Metz Middle School, 6th-grade students from Mayfield can use bus transportation available right here at Mayfield. Students need to check with their bus driver, but for the most part, all buses that leave Mayfield to go to Metz for their next pick-up. Students trying out for the middle school sports program will stay on their bus and then exit the bus once they arrive at Metz. The students will then be directed to the lobby outside of the gym and await further direction from the Metz athletic director and coaches.

Athletes will then have after-school activity buses available to take them home from tryouts at 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM.
