Team Stratonauts hunts for space rocks in Lake Michigan

Adler Planetarium Teens Hunt for Meteorites in Lake Michigan

Our Mission

On Monday, February 6, 2017, around 1:30am CST, a meteor, nearly the size of a minivan entered our atmosphere with an explosion equal to that of 10 tons of dynamite. It broke apart, after it lit up the midwestern sky in a blaze of green, and splashed down in Lake Michigan, 10 miles off the coast of Wisconsin. Team Stratonauts is going to try and find it!

Ever use weather data to hunt for an object older than our solar system? Ever design and 3D print a work of genius that can withstand nearly ten times the pressure we experience on earth? Ever wire and code a microcomputer, then send it on an underwater journey to discover, detect, and retrieve pieces of space?

Well now you can! And we can teach you how. Join the team!

Team Stratonauts is a teen focused, curiosity driven cohort of high school aged science pioneers, part of the Far Horizons Program (The Adler's Space Exploration Program). Not only will participants learn important STEM skills: 3D Printing, Computer Aided Design, Data Analysis, Coding, Soldering, Underwater Robotics-BUT they will also be learning alongside Adler STEM Professionals. Learn as a team, build as a team, explore as a team!

Join the team! Current high school students are encouraged to apply. Stipends will be given to participants PLUS round trip CTA passes will be provided.
