Family Night at Legacy
As the inspiration of our Book Fair Parent Volunteer Coordinator, Jaime Pannell, we collected items for A New Leash On Life Animal Shelter throughout the month of April and were able to present the items to the shelter when they joined us for an adopt-a-pet event at Family STEAM Night.
The Tech Team members helped plan activities and facilitate rooms with robots of all kinds, our MakerSpace Room and ClearTouch Table, as well as our PTLW coordinator, Tim Gels, who joined us for some coding fun and set the stage for the STEM activities.
For the “arts” in STEAM, students made cat and dog toys to donate to the shelter or take home to their own pets. Teachers hosted our traditional reading rooms featuring books about cats and dogs were coordinated with Michelle Choate, our Instructional Partner.
Legacy SGA and Jr. Tech Team helped man the craft and robotics rooms. We even had former Legacy students turned Middle Schoolers helping out.
Thanks to 1st grade teacher Kasia Dukes who coordinated with Therapy dogs from Therapy Partners, Inc. to be on site to share the love with our students.
Our PTO coordinated a $5.00 pizza buffet with Marco’s Pizza for families to enjoy throughout the event. Thanks to all who donated items and time and energy to make Family STEAM Night so much fun and to help out a great cause. Thanks for shopping the fair and take to time to PAWS TO READ a great book!

BHS Students Screen for P.A.D
Do you have P.A.D.??? Let's do a quick ABI to find out... #hbs #pltw
Peripheral artery disease (P.A.D.) is a disease in which plaque builds up in the arteries that carry blood to your head, organs, and limbs. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, fibrous tissue, and other substances in the blood. When plaque builds up in the body's arteries, the condition is called atherosclerosis. Over time, plaque can harden and narrow the arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body. P.A.D. usually affects the arteries in the legs, but it also can affect the arteries that carry blood from your heart to your head, arms, kidneys, and stomach.
A simple test, called an ankle-brachial index or ABI, can help determine whether you have peripheral artery disease. Mrs. Brickhouse's HBS students performed those screenings this week!

Digital Literacy and Computer Science in 5th Grade
Mrs. Moore’s 5th grade students at NMS are piloting the new AMSTI Digital Literacy and Computer Science kits for the 2018-2019 school year. In addition to Common Sense Media and Code.org lessons, they are learning how to program Ozobots using special color codes and the Ozoblockly program. In the photos they are designing racetracks that are exactly 100 cm long, have five 90 degree turns, and include five codes. The students ran three test trials and calculated the average time it took for their Ozobot to complete the track.
Thank you Mrs. Stanley for teaching our Kindergarteners about the life cycle of a butterfly! Our students watched as 20 butterflies were released. 🦋 🦋🦋

RIS Honor Society
The RIS Honor Society completed a service project at Sharon Johnston Park last Friday. The students helped get the park ready for the Annual Fishing Rodeo by clearing debris like sticks and branches away from the lake and cleaning all of the playground equipment. We were also able to weed one of the large flower beds and sweep out and help set up the new cabins that have recently been brought into the park. It was an exhausting and fun day!
Neon Lights Dance
Our Neon Lights 6th Grade Dance was a huge success! Sixth grade teachers, Mrs. Sutherland, Mrs. Watwood and Mrs. Whitaker blended right in. Mr. Hill and Mrs. Crutcher had fun, even if they had to help work. Our students had a blast!
