Hello SAU 34 Families, Students, and Staff,
We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable snow day!
Please remember that all SAU 34 schools are experiencing significantly higher than normal rates of illness, and it is important that we all work together to keep everyone healthy. Anyone who is ill or experiencing new onset of symptoms must remain home, even if those symptoms are mild. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to your school nurse. Thank-you for doing your part to protect our community.

H-DES Grade Three Wax Museum
H-DES Grade 3 students created a Wax Museum to share their learning. As part of their reading class, students focused on reading biographies and researching one person. Each student created a speech based on their research as well as a name poster that represented their person. During the Wax Museum, students presented to each other and other adults from school. It was such a huge success that they are coming to share their work with the Hillsboro-Deering School Board at the December 19th meeting!
H-DES Fifth Grade RtI Math Project: Geo City
A group of Math RtI students in fifth grade worked on a "GeoCity" for approximately six weeks. They began by defining two and three-dimensional shapes to use to build their city. They then created two-dimensional maps to outline what their city would end up looking like. The base to the city is pictured. Students chose a section of the city and included buildings and other parts of a city on their maps. They then built their three-dimensional buildings to represent the parts of their city. This included integral parts for a city to function, from a water treatment facility to grocery stores. They worked really hard and are proud of what they have created!
H-DHS Student Leadership
On Thursday, December 8, the executive council of Student Government attended a CARE conference (Community Actions Resulting in Experiences) at New England College. The college was planned and led by students in the SWOCO organization at Kearsarge High School (Students Working on Community Outreach.) The essential question of the conference was What Defines a Leader? Students and adult break out groups discussed ways to put leadership into action while getting involved in the school and outside communities. Topics were how to get organized, fundraise, find an engaging role for each member and generally, enjoy yourself while doing good. We also learned about other student-led conferences and made meaningful connections for starting and/or enlivening programs at Hillsboro Deering High School.
The student leaders and advisors were very impressed with the conference. They met this past week to debrief and make an action plan for implementing the ideas inspired by the conference.

Food Service
Automated Lunch Account Messaging
Food Services has been working with the H-DSD IT Department on setting up automated messages sent via email and text as a second layer of updating families, parents, and guardians about school lunch account balances.
This past Tuesday, a successful message was sent to families regarding negative account balances. We are still working to address who gets the automated messages. The only other notice that has been successfully sent this school year was in early September.
Moving forward, our goal is to have automated messages sent out on Mondays at approximately 6 pm with student lunch account balance information. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to get this process and system up and running smoothly!
To regularly monitor a student's lunch account and individual purchases, please create an account with "School EZ Pay". To create an account, you will need your student's school issued ID number. If you need an ID number or assistance creating an account please let me know as I am very happy to help you! This app will allow you to also upload money using a card if you choose (service fee of $2.50).
If you have any questions regarding a student school lunch account, school lunches, Free and Reduced School Price Lunch Applications, or anything relating to Food Services, please contact me at amuncy@hdsd.org or 464-1160.
Thank you,
Anna Muncy

NH Medicaid
- The NH Department of Health and Human Services has an important update for families with children covered by NH Medicaid. During the COVID-19 federal Public Health Emergency (PHE), New Hampshire has provided continuous health care coverage for children and families that receive Medicaid. When the PHE ends, this extended coverage will end too, and families may need to complete a renewal to re-certify their children’s Medicaid eligibility. Learn more about planning for the end of the PHE here.
Updated Website Calendar
The calendar on the SAU website has been updated to be more user-friendly and to provide selectable event views by building. In addition, the individual school calendars have also been updated to include events that are occurring in the other schools. These changes enable a single view for everyone to see what is happening across the SAU and District.
By clicking on the calendar name on the left-hand panel, you can hide that particular calendar's events from the larger view. You also can subscribe to a calendar to receive updates and changes to events.
