MES Monday Messenger

Admin Corner
We are committed to our targeted learning focus for the school:
Ponder, Persevere and Prove It!
Thank you to Mono Arts Council
Each year the month of November is recognized as Native American Heritage Month. This month, we would like to recognize and thank Mr. Sage Romero who is a teaching artist working with Mono Arts Council. Sage taught weekly classes to our fourth and fifth grade students as part of the MAC Cultural Arts program. He shared stories, traditions and culture from our local indigenous tribe, the Nuumu, Paiute tribe. As a culmination of this program, we hosted an assembly where Sage shared Hoop Dance and other activities with our students. Thank you MAC and Mr. Romero for a wonderful cultural arts experience.
Behavior Interventions & Restorative Practices
We are thrilled that MES has adopted a new behavior and interventions program from Navigate360 which gives us an effective way to reach out and help students who have an area of growth behaviorally. Within the program, there are lessons that may be assigned to help get your student to think about their behavior, what happened, and how they can make things right. They teach skills to give your student a chance to learn from their behavior and not repeat the behavior again. If your student is assigned a lesson by administration, you will be receive a note home. MMSST Program Start & Eligiblity
The Mammoth Mountain Ski and Snowboard programs begin midweek training as early as this week. Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and Mammoth Unified School District work together to develop academic and behavior standards that must be maintained in order to participate in the MMSST programs. Please remember that school is in session until 2:40 for children in grades 3-5, and students will be missing instructional time. Please communicate with your child's teacher to understand the classwork that will be missed and work together to make up the missing work. Students will be released from school at 12:30 via an announcement, and all students must be signed out by a parent/guardian/emergency contact. (We will revisit release time in December to try to move it to 12:45)
Eligibility
• ACADEMICS: All academic standards are monitored by individual teachers. A student cannot be missing assignments or getting less than passing grades, as set forth by the individual teacher. Grades are checked on a weekly basis. If a MMSST team student is ineligible, he/she does not ski on Wednesday. Any mountain team student that is not eligible for the week may not be represented by the Mammoth Mountain Race Dept. at competitions away from home on the weekend. They may also not travel with the team for that same reason.
• BEHAVIOR: Students receiving a referral at school on a ski day are not allowed to ski on that day.
• RULES: When buses start, students must get to the bus on time after skiing. Buses depart at specific times. Students will not be allowed to ski the following week/day if they are late for the bus. Students may not use candy/soda machines during the school days. Students may not purchase food in the cafeteria on a school ski day.
We practice number sense routines weekly. Utilizing the image below with students in grades 2-5, you can practice these math skills at home as well. See what your student thinks about this week's image of the week. By clicking the link in the title above, you can explore even more math resources for your child.
BONUS** Write down your student's or family's ideas by Friday, and turn it into the office for a little surprise!
Attendance
Daily attendance is so important. Please remember to have your student attend every day and arrive on time to school. Our goal is to get above 95% daily attendance!
The week before the Thanksgiving break, our average was 88%. Grade level attendance percentages were as follows:
TK - 96% 🤩
K - 89%
1 - 89%
2 - 88%
3 - 87%
4 - 88%
5 - 85%
We have a new system integrated with our attendance program that is making automated contact with families when a student is marked absent. If you have already called in your child's attendance for the day, you can ignore the message. If you have not already made contact, please call our attendance hotline to report why @ 760-934-7162. If your child’s absence is not reported, it is considered truant. Also note that this is a monitored line for leaving an attendance message only. You will not receive a call back.
