Virtual Lunch and Learn Series for SSD Families and Stakeholders.
Special School District’s Family and Community Outreach, Social Work, Parent Education and Diversity Awareness (PEDA) and Communications departments have teamed up to offer a virtual Lunch & Learn series for SSD families and stakeholders. The series, which will involve community organizations sharing information about their work, will take place on the first Wednesday of each month during the 2021-22 school year, from 11:30 AM - Noon.
Representatives from nine community organizations will participate in order to increase awareness about their agency and make connections with those in our SSD community who may benefit from their programs and services.
Organizations represented in the Lunch & Learn series include:
Wellness Corner-Deep Breathing
During stressful times, it is extremely important for us to take care of ourselves. Deep breathing can be a wonderful method to enhance our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The added bonus is that deep breathing can be performed practically anywhere at any time without the need for any special materials or equipment. If you’d like to reduce stress and anxiety, improve your sleep, and improve your cognitive focus, you may want to practice these three simple breathing techniques:
While sitting, with one hand on the chest and the other on the belly, take a deep breath in through the nose, ensuring the diaphragm (not the chest) inflates with enough air to create a stretch in the lungs. Exhale slowly through pursed lips. Initially repeat 3 times. You can work up to 6-10 deep, slow breaths per minute for 2-3 minutes.
This exercise involves breathing in through the nose for a count of four, holding the breath for a count of four, breathing out slowly for a count of four, and then holding for another count of four, essentially making a “square” or “box” with the breath.
This technique involves breathing in through the nose for a count of four, holding the breath for a count of seven, and exhaling through the lips for a count of eight.
While we often take breathing for granted, it’s important to take the time to appreciate every inhale and exhale we take. Slowing our breath is a way to slow down the world around us and improve our physical health as well as our mental health. So, breathe deep…the power to change your life is already inside you!
Hello! My name is Tami Melton and I work at Kirkwood High School. In 2011, my family and I moved to St. Louis and built a house in Eureka. In 2016, I returned to the teaching field and became a teacher within the Alternative Learning Community at KHS. I am in my 6th year at KHS and I feel like this is where I am meant to be! I have loved the experiences of creating social opportunities for our students and engaging them in a natural way with their peers. One of the best part of my days is when O see them grow into independent students within their home community.
It is a great day to be a Pioneer!!
I have had the pleasure of working in SSD for the past 14 years. One of the things I enjoy most about working for SSD, outside of the students, is my co-workers. The teachers and paras give so much to our students. They really are the most dedicated, helpful, and energetic people I know! I also love seeing how much progress our students make in the short time they are in middle school. When I am not working, I enjoy reading, running, shopping, and trying new restaurants. I also love traveling and spending time with my husband and two daughters. We love swimming at the Kirkwood Pool, going to sporting events, and heading to the Lake of the Ozarks in the summer!
Hello! I have worked steadfast as a para for SSD since 2009. I love my job and love seeing the development of students as they make connections and grow both academically and socially, there is so much beauty in the process! It brings me joy to meet the students where they are and support them, along with so many other great staff, in meeting their goals. In my free time I enjoy bike riding, walking and hiking. My wife and I love the love that goes into and comes out of our family time with our 14 year old son and daughter. One of my favorite quotes comes from a book titled, The Cat I Never Named: "The world is a beautiful place. It's not beautiful everywhere but that just makes it more important to look for the beauty."
It is a great day to be a Pioneer!!
