Principal's Message
May is such an exciting month at Petway! Our students feel rejuvenated after spring break and are looking forward to a wonderful spring.
Petway School has chosen Danica Newcomb as our 2019 Giraffe Hero. A giraffe hero is an individual who exemplifies the special characteristics of the giraffe. The giraffe has an extremely large heart, a very long neck, which it will stick out for others and its long legs help the giraffe persevere through hard times. Danica will be honored at a special celebration on May 15th. Danica has distinguished herself through her kindness and service to others. We are very proud of Danica and are fortunate to have her in our school as a role model.
May is a month to celebrate two very important groups of people - our teachers and our mothers. On May 7th, we honor our teachers on National Teacher’s Day. This is a very important day at Petway. Our exceptional staff work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of our children. I thank them for the dedication and professionalism they show every day. Our Petway staff truly care about our students and go above and beyond each and every day. Please take the time to send your child’s teacher a note of appreciation on this very special day.
Sunday, May 10th is Mother’s Day. This is the perfect opportunity to honor all our Petway mothers. You are also a hard working group who care for and teach your children. We sincerely appreciate the time and energy you spend with your children. The partnership between our teachers and our mothers is what makes our Petway Patriots shine. All of our mothers are invited to join us for Morning with Mom on Friday, May 10th for a special breakfast treat.
The week of May 20th, Mrs. Andrews will be holding an Open House in the Music Room. Parents are invited to join their child in Music Class. Students will demonstrate musical elements and how they connect to the many areas of elementary learning. This is an opportunity for parents to see their child shine in the area of music.
The wonderful spring weather is the perfect opportunity to spend family time together outside. Encourage your children to leave behind the video games and the television and get active. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Your child will feel better and perform better in school.
Best Wishes,
Mrs. Frederico

First Grade
We have started Unit 5 in reading. They will be reading and comparing fiction and non-fiction selections. Please study nightly to help your child master their words and remember them even after the week is over. The words show back up in other stories, and it is helpful for them to have a large amount of sight words memorized. Just a reminder that all reading tests are read independently by the students, so please continue reading at home. The more your child reads the easier reading becomes. In Math, we will be continuing with shapes. We have looked at 3D shapes and have moved onto flat shapes. Please continue to review math facts nightly. We will be continuing with Science and will learn about living and non-living things. Plants and animals will be the focus. Please continue to remind your child to follow the Pathway to Patriot Pride.

2019 Phillies All Star Student
Christopher DeCarvalho Chanez has been chosen as a 2019 Phillies All Star Student. He will be recognized on May 15th at Citizen Bank Park during the Philadelphia Phillies Game. Chris displays Petway's character traits in all that he does. He demonstrates true compassion when he visits Ms. Shropshire’s classroom. Chris gives up his recess time as part of Petway's CARES program to provide positive interactions and engagement to the intellectually disabled students, who are mostly non-verbal with multiple handicaps. Although these children are remarkable children in their own special way, they face difficulties that many people cannot understand. However, Chris has the innate and spectacular ability to connect with these children and make them feel loved. He has become an essential part of Ms. Shropshire's classroom; his new friends excitedly anticipate his arrival almost daily.
In addition to his exceptional kindness, Chris maintains an A average. He is a well rounded student participating in after-school activities such as Chorus and theater. Chris has the potential to accomplish wonderful things in his life. He is most deserving of this special recognition.
Jen Pilla Honored by NJEA and Philadelphia Soul
Congratulations to Petway Elementary School teacher Jen Pilla, who has been selected as the NJEA and Philadelphia Soul VIP Teacher for the Soul’s home opener! Pilla, who was nominated by Petway music teacher Jeanne Andrews, was selected as the first of seven statewide VIP Teachers.
“We are so proud of the work that Ms. Pilla does on a daily basis in our school and the community to promote patriotism, respect for our country, and honor for the members of the armed services,” said Andrews.
Pilla will receive her special recognition at the first home game this season on Saturday, April 27 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. We are proud to have Petway and Vineland Public Schools represented on the field during VIP Teacher Night.
