Dear Stoller families,
I hope your summer is getting off to a great start. It has been an incredible year for our building. I have enjoyed getting to know students and families. I am looking forward to welcoming back our returning 7th and 8th graders and our new incoming 6th graders.
Many of you have been communicating with me and your children about the possibility of hall changes for our students next year. One of my tasks this year was to observe and find a way to build community in our building. Because of our size, this has been a challenge. Past practice of our neighborhood model has promoted a culture of isolation from the school and not a part of the larger school community.
Next year we will be moving away from students being placed in the same hall for all three years. Students will still have their courses in one hall and their teachers will still be on a team looking after the needs of all students.
The goal of this change is to get students to participate as school community members versus hall members. We want students to develop school-wide relationships and increase their friendship circle. This will help students become more socially adjusted because of a broader and ever-expanding peer group.
This change will also provide our students with the opportunity to increase their capacity to collaborate with a more diverse group of people. Students will be able to experience a variety of teaching styles and learning environments which will better prepare them for high school. This builds capacity and skills that help prepare students for the 21st century workforce where collaboration within diverse settings is essential.
Because of the nature of our Summa program, students in this program will stay together. However, our Summa program will be relocating to the Orange Hall.
Thank you in advance for your support as we take these important steps to better prepare your students as they transition beyond middle school.
Have a wonderful summer.

2019 Summer Meals Program
This summer, children can enjoy free lunches through the Summer Food Service Program sponsored by Beaverton School District Nutrition Services Department. The Summer Food Service Program is a federally-funded nutrition program open to all children ages 1-18 years. Adults can eat for just $3.50. No applications or registration are necessary, and all children and teens are welcome. In addition to lunch, some sites offer breakfast in conjunction to scheduled summer school programs.
There are 18 school sites providing meals this summer. All children are encouraged and welcome to come join in the fun! Bring your children or tell a friend. Operation days can be different for some sites so please check the Nutrition Services Summer Meal Program website for dates, locations, and times. Lunches will be served Mon. - Fri., June 18 through August 16, 2019 at most of the following sites:
Elementary Schools: Beaver Acres, Chehalem, Elmonica, Greenway, Hazeldale, Kinnaman, McKay, McKinley, Raleigh Park, and Vose.
Middle Schools: Meadow Park, Mountain View
High Schools: Beaverton, Merlo Station (Mobile truck), Mountainside, Southridge, Sunset and Westview.
This year, the BSD, in partnership with Nike and other community partners, will offer Kids Yoga classes as well as song and dance classes at some of our sites. We are also partnering with THPRD to again offer the RecMobile for great fun, friends and activities to keep kids busy this summer. Along with the RecMobile, other activities will include the Beaverton City Library Story Time, OSU Extension Service’s “Food Hero” Cooking Classes for kids and more.
