Term 4 is traditionally a busy and fun term for learners and this year is no different. Athletics Day on Tuesday was a huge success and it was great to see learners competing in a variety of events and showing resilience, energy and compassion. Congratulations to those learners who have qualified for North Shore Zone Athletics Day on Friday 11th November.
Year 8 Exhibition - Our Year 8 learners are excited to be sharing at the Exhibition Evening on Thursday 10th November. This evening represents a significant event for a PYP school and learners, synthesizing the essential elements of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community. As a culminating experience, it is an opportunity for learners to exhibit the attributes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile they have been developing throughout their engagement with the PYP.
The evening will run from 6.00-7.30 pm and we encourage you to come along and view the exceptional learning that has taken place. We will have limited parking available on our school courts and Smales Farm will have some limited parking available. However please note due to the extensive construction taking place at Smales Farm you will need to enter via Tarahoto Road. Alternatively, you could try the Barfoot and Thompson Netball Centre for parking.
Social Media Use - Recently, we have been alerted to some concerning social media use by our learners outside of the school day, which naturally impacts the learners when they are at school. We strongly encourage all parents/caregivers to monitor their child’s devices carefully and regularly, to help us keep all learners safe. Also we strongly recommend that learners do not have access to devices once they go to bed.
Biking to School- We have a large number of learners who bike to school which is fantastic, however, we are surrounded by busy roads. We strongly encourage those learners who bike to school to wear a brightly coloured bib or jacket so they do stand out and be seen by motorists and always follow road rules at all times.
Paid Union Meetings- On the 16th & 24th of November teachers will be attending Paid Union Meetings to discuss the progress of negotiations for their collective employment agreements. This campaign aims to win smaller class sizes, more support for high-needs students, better recognition of cultural skills, greater job security for our essential relievers, and fairly value and recognise the work of teachers. As a school, we will manage the disruptions to learners and school will operate as normal.
Education Review Office (ERO)-Te Ara Huarau is the evaluation approach that the Education Review Office (ERO) is now using in all school. This a developmental approach to evaluation where ERO and our school work together over time rather than one-off reviews that happened previously. Te Ara Huarau is used in most English-medium state and state-integrated schools.
ERO maintains a regular review programme to evaluate and report on the education and care of young people in schools. Our school worked alongside ERO to write our Profile Report. This type of report will only happen once as part of our initial engagement with Te Ara Huarau. The profile report reflects our strategic goals and a shared evaluation focus on one or more areas that are important to us as we work together to improve outcomes for all our learners. ERO, like us, have a strong focus on equity and excellence. Future reporting will show our progress and achievement towards meeting the goals we have set. Please see attached ERO report.

ATHLETICS DAY ROUNDUP

And an amazing team of staff
That's what it took to bring Athletics back to TNIS and what a return it was! After 2 years of not being able to run whole school events our learners were so excited to get involved.
The team spirit was on full display as each team dressed in their respective colours, hand crafted signs of support, and choreographed an awesome team chant.
For our social athletes, there were a variety of events in which the learners could earn team points. These included: the Frisbee toss, the tennis ball throw, and the longest jump. These events were a great way to give everybody an opportunity to contribute to their teams success.
For our competitive learners, our groundsmen Hiramai expertly configured a Sprints Track, and Discus and Shot Put rings to allow our learners the best opportunity to succeed. We had some amazing competitors but a few stood out amongst the pack.
We would like to congratulate the following age grade champions:
Year 7 Girls: Elizabeth Plaistowe
Year 7 Boys: Cam Gordon
Year 8 Girls: Katie Moors & Lula Free
Year 8 Boys: Evan Liew
We would also like to congratulate Haru Watanabe for his herculean effort in Discus. Haru has set a new school record with a whopping throw of 26.49m
To bring an end to Athletics, each team showcased their chant, and what an absolute pleasure it was to see the team pride within our school.
Thanks again to everyone involved in making the 2022 TNIS athletics carnival a huge success.

The Resilience Project Tour
The Resilience Project curriculum is a powerful part of how we support the mental health and wellbeing of our students at TNIS.
The founder of the programme Hugh Van Cuylenburg is touring New Zealand and will be appearing at the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November.
If you are already talking about The Resilience Project at home, or you would like to find out more, join Hugh as he walks you through his journey and tells stories of the incredible people who have inspired him and The Resilience Project to spread happiness. Hugh will unpack the research on mental health and break it down into simple tips that will leave you feeling empowered to improve your wellbeing.
Adults, parents, professionals, teenagers: this talk is for you. Well, really, it’s for anyone who wants to share a laugh and pick up some wellbeing tips along the way.

Calling all musicians who are coming to Westlake in 2023!
Westlake Girls Transition Interviews
At WGHS, we understand first-hand that good parent-school partnerships are the best way to support our students' learning. In Term 3, we encourage parents of students attending WGHS in 2023 who have additional learning and behavioural needs to start this partnership process now. Please consider booking your daughter's enrolment interview with Mrs Julie Mulcahy, the Head of Learning Enhancement at WGHS. This is an opportunity for you as parents and your daughter to share information about learning needs so we can work together to support a successful transition from intermediate to secondary schooling.
I look forward to meeting our new families and students so we can ensure every student at Westlake is supported, present, participating, learning and belonging in 2023. Please use the following email address enrolments@westlakegirls.school.nz and specify that you want to make an appointment with Julie Mulcahy. This meeting will be for 30mins.
