Welcome, Javiera!
Hubbs student, Javiera joins Hubbs Center as front desk staff
Javiera has been a Hubbs Center student since January and now is part of our staff too. She moved to Minnesota last November from Chile (which is a very thin country in South America, next to Argentina). You can find her at the front desk every evening. In this new job she will be happy to help you in any need you may have. She is very grateful for the opportunity to be part of Hubbs Center staff.
Javiera found out about Hubbs Center through the advertisement on public transit, and as a student she experienced the desire to contribute to this community.
The feature of her job that Javiera likes the most is the possibility to help students in their needs.
A typical day for Javiera:
In the morning Javiera attends her English online classes and after that she tries to workout. After lunch, she gets ready for her job, takes the bus, and arrives at the Hubbs Center. At the end of the day, she likes to prepare her food for the next day and watch a movie or series with her husband.
Besides her job, Javiera enjoys to spending time with her family, going hiking, and visiting natural places. Also, she is a true doglover and one of her main hobbies is baking.

Why We Should Read
Last month, the evening ELL C class, taught by Signe Ilstrup, had a great discussion about why we should read and what reading does for us. Below is a list of reasons for reading the students created. (Maybe some good ideas for summer!)
· Become smarter
· Learn about new things
· Get information
· Learn new words/increase vocabulary
· Learn how to do something
· Increase background knowledge
· Learn about other people and places
· Learn history
· To relax
· Develop sympathy and empathy for others
· Become a better writer
· Learn grammar
· Improve pronunciation
· For fun or entertainment
Some of you may wonder how reading can do all of the things in the students’ list, but reading can. Every time we read, our brains learn more about reading and language. That’s why people who read a lot are usually better writers and have better control of grammar than people who don’t read much. Reading can also help you improve your pronunciation if you read texts with audio recordings and read aloud with the recording.
As one of the students said, reading makes you smarter, so time spent reading is never wasted!

International Institute Training
Calling all Minnesota moms! Join this fun fishing challenge.
The DNR has partnered with the Student Anglers Organization (SAO) to host a virtual fishing challenge, just for moms in Minnesota, May 13-14. All moms who submit a photo of a fish they catch (any size or species) during Mother’s Day weekend will be entered in a random drawing for prizes – SCHEELS gift cards and Onyx lifejackets. There are over 100 prizes up for grabs!
This is not a competition – it’s just for fun. Our goal is to get as many Minnesota moms out fishing as we can during Take a Mom Fishing weekend, which falls on Mother’s Day weekend every year. All moms in Minnesota can fish without a license during Take a Mom Fishing weekend.
We invite you to join in the fun and take your family out fishing to celebrate Mother’s Day. This challenge is open to all moms in Minnesota, so feel free to invite your friends and spread the word! Let’s see how many fish Minnesota moms can catch.
Learn more about the challenge on the SAO website.
How to participate:
1. Join the Facebook group: Minnesota Moms Fishing Challenge
2. Invite your friends! This challenge is open to all moms in Minnesota – the more, the merrier!
3. On May 13 and 14 (from midnight to 11:59PM), post photos of your catches in the Facebook group.
4. Keep an eye on your Facebook messenger following the event as SAO will be reaching out to the randomly selected winners in the prize drawing.
