Grandparent Lunch Rescheduled:
An Important Message From Traci Early, Shelby County Public Schools, District Health Nurse:
Parents and Guardians,
Earlier today you received an email from our district health nurse Traci Early regarding the new vaccines your student may need. The Department of Public Health has a
new requirement for every Middle School aged student to have evidence of
receiving 2 Hepatitis A vaccinations. Please review the document and speak
with your child's pediatrician to determine if your child needs any
vaccinations. The Hepatitis A vaccination series is comprised of two
vaccinations received 6 months apart. The CDC has recommended this vaccination series for several years, so many children have already received this two dose series but since it was not a requirement for school attendance it was not listed on most immunization certificates. A new immunization certificate will
need to be provided to your child's school.
This requirement is in addition to the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccinations that are required between the ages of 11-12.
Thank you for your time and attention in making sure your child is meeting all of the vaccination requirements for school attendance.
If you have any questions regarding this, please email Traci Early at the address below.
Sincerely,
Traci Earley RN CCM
District Health Coordinator

Students may register for their AP exams starting Friday, December 1, 2017- February 16, 2018. Students will register online through our Total Registration site: www.TotalRegistration.net/AP/182400
This site allows students to pay with a debit or credit card, or a check. The cost per exam is $98.00. If you are on Free and Reduced lunch stop by and see Mrs. Settles or Mrs. Purdom for more information on how to register. Students new to AP must register on the site and create an account. If students have account trouble or cannot remember a password, send them to me. If you would like help with showing your students how to navigate the site, please let me know. We have been using this registration method for about six years, so most of our students are used to it and will just need to log in and register for the exams. Why is it very important to have parental involvement….
· The most accurate predictor of a student’s achievement in school is not income or social status, but the extent to which that student’s family is able to (1) create a home environment that encourages learning; (2) communicate high, yet reasonable, expectations for their children’s achievement and future careers; and (3) become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community.
· Student behaviors such as alcohol use, violence, and anti-social behavior decrease as parent involvement increases.
· Students are more likely to fall behind in academic performance if their parents do not participate in school events, develop a working relationship with their child's educators, or keep up with what is happening in their child's school.
· The benefits of involving parents are not confined to the early years; there are significant gains at all ages and grade levels.
· Middle and senior high school students whose parents remain involved make better transitions, maintain the quality of their work, and develop realistic plans for their future. Students whose parents are not involved, on the other hand, are more likely to drop out of school.
· When parents are involved, students achieve more, regardless of socio-economic status, ethnic/racial background, or the parents’ education level.
· When parents are involved in their student’s education, those students have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and complete homework more consistently.
· When parents are involved, students exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior, increased motivation and better self esteem.
· Students whose parents are involved in their lives have higher graduation rates and greater enrollment rates in post-secondary education.

Kentucky Farm Bureau's Scholarship:
Applications for Kentucky Farm Bureau's College Scholarships available now
Louisville, Kentucky (January 18, 2018) - With high school seniors beginning their last semesters, thoughts turn to the future. For many students, this means college – and finding a way to pay for tuition. Later this spring, the KFB Education Foundation will award college scholarships ranging from $400 to $4,000 to 95 high school seniors pursuing a four-year degree.
To be considered, students must complete the application available for download atkyfb.com/scholarships and return the requested material to KFB postmarked by February 28, 2018. Qualifying students will have at least a 3.5 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) or a minimum 23 ACT score, be the child of a KFB member, and finish high school within the year in which they apply.
KFB also offers additional scholarships, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. To be considered for these college scholarships, students must meet the varied criteria outlined for each, complete the appropriate downloadable application available at kyfb.com/scholarships and return the requested material to KFB postmarked by April 28, 2018.
"The Foundation's goal is to assist as many individuals as possible in attaining their educational pursuits," said David S. Beck, Executive Vice President of Kentucky Farm Bureau. "Post-secondary education costs continue to rise and Farm Bureau scholarships help defray some of the expenses associated with obtaining a degree. There is no better investment for the organization than to invest in our members and their children."
KFB's Education Foundation, created to help Farm Bureau members and their families reach their goal of obtaining post-secondary education, was formed in 1953. During the last 64 years, the Education Foundation has awarded thousands of scholarships – worth nearly three million dollars – to both traditional and non-traditional students.
To learn more about these and several other college scholarships offered by Kentucky Farm Bureau, visitkyfb.com/scholarships.
