Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Autumn Term 1 - Issue 3

A word from Mr Broom.

We're now three weeks into the new school academic year and our school routines are settling in nicely. The body clock is working nicely and I seem to wake up every morning at 6am... even Sunday's which can be a pain!

Behaviour in school continues to go from strength to strength and, since the introduction of our new behaviour ladder, children are self-managing their behaviour much more and this is having a positive impact in lessons.

As we continue to seek and value individuality and flair, we've had musical demonstrations of woodwind, brass and stringed instruments in the hope that some of our children will be encouraged to take up their musical talents. More to follow on this in the coming weeks.

Some of our year three children did incredibly well at the local schools' multi-skills festival at Kellington on Thursday. Their exemplary behaviour was noted by many of the visiting teachers.

This week, I've met with all the year five children and parents/carers, where we've talked about the great start to the year and what we expect of them in the months to come. As always, the 'can't do it...yet' mentality was discussed at length.

Next week, it's the Low Mill residential for our wonderful year six children. The excitement is almost unbearable and I'm sure they'll do us proud.

Finally, thank you to those of you who have supported our Twitter drive. The children and teachers can't wait to share their learning with you soon.

Year 5 Table Champions

Gethin, Molly, Harri & Maddy had a special treat of hot chocolate and biscuits with me this morning. They were the top scoring table out of the whole class this week. Well done guys!

Parent Lunches - Opportunities to join your child for lunch.

Next week, we have two opportunities for some of our parents to join their children for a school lunch.

Tuesday 26th - It's the turn of our parents of our Year Three children.

Friday 29th - It's the turn of our parent of our Year Four & Five children.

All the details are on Parentpay and the link is at the bottom of this newsletter.

Children's Taster Day - Free School Meal for KS1 children

Our key stage one children receive free school meals as part of the government initiative of healthy eating. If your child is in key stage one (Reception year through to Year 2) and bring a packed lunch, we are running a taster day on Thursday 5th October. We'd like the children to give it a go!

Location of Parent Consultations

Our parent consultations taking place on Monday 25th September will take place in the Upper Key Stage 2 part of school. If your consultation is scheduled for Monday, please come to the school entrance in the first instance.

Miss Ball's Reception class meetings, Mrs Roberton's Year 1 Class meetings and Mrs Butterfield's Year 2 class meetings will take place in the Year 5 classroom. Mrs Dulling's Year 3 class meetings and Miss Smith's Year 4 class meetings will take place in the Year 6 classroom. Please see the map.

While the meetings take place, our children will be working on a project based around the whole school focus on inspiration. We've paired the children up in a way that they can work together to produce some fantastic work and I'm looking forward to displaying it around school.

If you are attending a Tuesday consultation, these will take place in your child's classroom as normal but you will still need to come through the main entrance.

Community Links Developing

Over the past couple of weeks, we've been making contact with some of the community groups/workers around and the Sherburn area. I've spoken with a number of child care providers about wrap-around care for both before and after-school. This is following your input with the school parental survey.

I've also made good links with Sherburn White Rose Football Club who will be using our grounds on a Sunday morning. They have agreed to provide school with two sets of football goals, keep the lines marked and help provide us with a new football kit. I'm really looking forward to seeing this partnership develop.

Behaviour Ladder in Place

As mentioned in my personal comments above, we now have a behaviour ladder in place across school. This has been designed by the children, for the children and the ideas from all classes were pooled together by the Junior Leadership Team to form the school behaviour ladder.

It's interesting to see that visiting the senior leadership team is just as important as a positive reward as it is a sanction.

Sherburn High School Open Day

Sherburn High School are holding their open day on Saturday 23rd September (tomorrow). Information has been sent out to our Y4, 5 & 6 children last week.

School Entrance Display

I'm in the process of making an entrance display to celebrate the wider learning that our children undertake. If your child is involved in a club, sport or activity outside of school, we'd love to hear about it. Any photos would be most appreciated. I'm also going to be talking about 'who inspires you?' soon and the work created can go alongside the information brought in. Many thanks in advance.

Football Club Y5/6 - Parent Support Request

I've handed out the letters to our Year 5/6 children for the football club starting on Thursday 5th October. It came as no surprise that all 30 places were taken! If football is a passion of yours and you would like to help support our football club, please get in touch with myself. The more the merrier!

Growth Mindset - What's it all about?

Please take the time to watch this video with your child. This will help us on our journey to establish a Growth Mindset across our school.

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate, we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Congratulations to our Reception Class who are our attendance champions in school this week. Three weeks in a row!!!!!

As you can see below, out attendance in many classes is way above the national average which is fantastic. Thank you for your support on this.
