12 Days of Kindness Countdown!
Please encourage your children to complete the 12 days of kindness challenge that we have! The kids have a chain countdown on their lockers. Each day they will pull off one link and complete the random act of kindness that they wrote on that strip. We are encouraging the kids to bring the slips home and share their act of kindness with you. Please ask them about it!
We had an author visit! Ask you child about it!
Reading
This week in reading we adjusted from novices to experts on our research topics! We talked about how we will encounter challenging texts on our topics and we need to be able to navigate them. One strategy we taught them is to always read with the main ideas in mind, thinking how does this information connect to the main ideas of my topic? We generated 4 or 5 main ideas to carry with us as we continue our research!
Writing
This week in writing we worked on the structure of our informational writing pieces. The students made decisions as writers to determine the best way to organize each section of their text. They also focused on creating a cohesive piece by including transition words to effectively connect their paragraphs and sections.
Math
We continued our work on fractions with unlike denominators. They learned multiple strategies to add and subtract fractions with unlike parts. We started with the concrete model where students were making fractions with the same size parts. They then learned how to draw the model that they made. Eventually, students saw the connection between their visual representation and the abstract model. It was a successful week!
