Principal's Message
December. Can you believe that? Please see our Countdown Calendar for our fun theme days all December, including the "Ugly (or Festive) Sweater" for Monday!
One of our School Improvement Goals for this year is to incorporate Independent Reading time daily. Our students have been building stamina, extending the length of time they can independently read. You can help encourage the same at home! Set a timer, or better yet, a stopwatch to see how long your child can read without getting too distracted. Set goals for just a few seconds longer each time.
We call it OTTERS Time (Our Time To Enjoy Reading Silently). Let your children see you reading too! Have some OTTERS time together!

That's AVID! Family - School Connection
WICOR is part of the AVID Schoolwide Instruction, and is an acronym for Writing to learn, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading to learn.
This week's Coyote Call will address the W in WICOR, Writing to Learn.
The focus of Writing to Learn is to not only write, but to USE their writing. This writing is used in all subject areas as a way to engage students in higher level thinking, make connections, reflect, explore, problem solve, retain learning, and more. This is a very different strategy than Learning to Write.
Writing to Learn also encompasses note-taking, journaling, quickwrites, one pagers, using word banks, sentence frames, learning logs. Two and three-column notes are examples of structured forms of note-taking. Student assignment notebooks are not only an organizational tool, but also incorporate writing, as students can include what they learned in each subject area. They can use the Lesson Objective to reflect on their own level of content mastery. Notes are a way to refresh memory and help transfer concepts from short to long-term memory. Research has shown that those who take notes by hand, as opposed to using a laptop, have better understanding and can more easily apply and integrate new learning.
At home strategy: Try a One Pager!
Children summarize learning or a concept with a graphic and text representation. This could be an image or idea from a read aloud. Have your child draw the setting or character, and include words from the text to describe the picture.
Schoolwide Second Step Focus
All grade levels will work on the following:
- Nurturing Gratitude from the inside out
- Random Acts of Kindness
- Define gratitude/grateful
- What/Who am I grateful for?
- What emotions are associated with gratitude?
- Acts of Kindness are often returned with kindness.

Snow/Emergency Day Reminder
Parents/Guardians,
Snow/Emergency Day work packets have been sent home and are available in your child's Google Classroom. In the event the school would need to close for snow/emergencies, the school day will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Teachers will be available by phone, email, and live in their Google Meets from: 9-9:30am, 11:30am-12pm and 1:30-2pm to support and answer any questions a child might have.
Student attendance is required for a snow/emergency day. The second page of each packet will be collected by the classroom teacher when school reopens. The students only need to bring THAT page back filled out by the parent. They do not need to bring the whole packet back to school. Please keep it in a safe place at home. We will be using this as our instructional tool for our snow/emergency days.
Please know that all elementary schools are following this same procedure. If you have any questions please email your classroom teacher for clarification.
Thank you.
