Kindergarten
It is definitely “heating up” in kindergarten and not just because Spring weather has finally arrived. The kindergarten classes are learning about the effects of the sun. We have learned that the sun is a star and it produces both light and heat energy. Mrs. David’s class built a “Solar Oven” out of a pizza box and was able to make delicious s’mores in it. Soon, we will be building creatures with solar beads and pipe cleaners. After our “solar creatures” are created we will be using the Engineering Process to create a structure that will protect them from the sun’s light. The end of kindergarten will definitely be a sizzling experience!
1st grade
2nd grade
Second grade has been taking advantage of the warmer weather and getting out on the nature trail. We’ve been observing nature like scientists! We had a beautiful sunny day for our field trip to Mill Cove where we learned about the water cycle, pollution and spent time in the creek catching critters!
3rd grade
Throughout the month of May, third grade will be anxiously awaiting for some guest to be peeping around the classroom. We will begin our chick incubation project and explore the lifecycle from egg to chicken.
As we near the end of the school year we want to remind you of many important dates coming up in the Month of May.
May 2nd field trip to the PA Lumber Museum in Coudersport
May 8th field trip to The Northern Appalachian Research Branch (NARB)
May 17th Field trip to Powilson farm
May 24th Night of Wonder
May 25th Field Day
4th grade
Grade 4 students had a feeding frenzy when they role-played how insects eat in science class. Each student used one of the 4 insect mouthparts to find the tasty snack that fit their mouth.
Next the students were seen communicating like insects in an activity called “Find
your Kind.” Both of these role-playing activities are part of our unit on structure and function.
Welcome to the Red Planet.
The students will be starting their Night of Wonder project:
The Colonization of Mars the first week of May. Students will be busy problem solving how to overcome the challenges of living on Mars.
5th grade
Gettysburg!
Friday April 27th was a memorable day for the 5th graders of Warren L. Miller! This was our culminating field trip to the Gettysburg National Museum and Battlefield. Highlights of the trip included the cyclorama, museum and monuments which we researched prior to the trip. These monuments include the 12th & 44th NY infantry on Little Round Top, the 99th PA infantry and 40th NY Sharpshooters at Devil’s Den and of course the VA and PA monuments. A favorite part of the trip is always the bus ride and buffet at the end of a long yet memorable day!
Night Of Wonder
We are inspiring our students to think like engineers for their N.O.W. project! We will be using the E.D.P. of Asking Qs, Imagining, Planning, Creating, and Improving to build playground equipment prototypes which will be working models of swing sets, Merry-go-rounds, slides, jungle gyms and shade structures. Our students are applying their knowledge of geometrical angles and measurements to build sturdy, reliable and safe structures. ..check them out on May 24th!
6th grade
4...3...2...1... Blast off! Sixth Graders are about to embark on their quest to design and build their very own rockets!
They will continue through the engineering process with their Night of Wonder Hydraulic projects. They will use simple hydraulic motions to make real world machines and objects with their groups.
Art
All of the students grades K-6 have been reviewing their portfolios in order to select their own masterpiece for the art show.
The art show is Thursday, May 17th, from 6-8pm! Same night as the Book Fair and PTO will be selling pizza for dinner in the cafeteria!
Please join us in the front garden at 5:45 p.m., for a short ceremony and dedication to the life of Kiel Lampman.
After the Art Show is over, students will be bringing all of their work home. Watch for the big portfolios full of your child’s artwork!

Guidance
The 4th grade students have been learning about wise choices in Guidance classes. Two specific topics have been discussed that are of great importance. These two topics are internet safety and drug and alcohol prevention. The students work on making healthy decisions when it comes to time spent on the internet and dangers associated with communicating with others and sharing personal information. The students are also discovering the dangers of drugs and alcohol and wise choices when it comes to saying no to any type of drug that could be hurtful. Some facts are discussed and the students learn reasons why drugs and alcohol are so dangerous to the human body, friendships, school, work and family relationships.

The Book Fair is a great way to support your school while purchasing quality, high interest books for your student. It is a fun week for students and a great fundraiser for our school library. Please contact me if you are willing to volunteer to help at the Book Fair.
The last day for book checkout this school year is May 10th. All books must be returned no later than May 18th. Please help your student to return their books on time or to submit payment to replace their book. Thank you for supporting your school library!

Title I
Summer Slide and the Importance of Reading over the Summer
“Summer slide” is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. When children read during the summer, there is less likelihood of seeing this “slide.”
Your child is invited to join a free summer library program at Mansfield’s Free Public Library on Wednesdays from June 13th through August 1st. Registration began on May 1st and ends June 2nd. Registration can be done online at mansfieldpubliclibrary.com/childrens/summer-reading/ or contact the library at (570) 662.3850.
Please consider this even if your child cannot make every weekly meeting. The goal is to keep our reading muscles strong over the summer.
