Kindergarten
This week in Kindergarten we had a “Bad Case of Stripes” and learned about “Being Yourself”! We explored the unique adjectives in the book and how they related to the illustrations in the book. We also became detectives and found other adjectives that describe the character traits in the book.
We continued practicing our addition, subtraction and skip counting during math. Our favorite thing we did this week in math was adding and subtracting the yards it took to get a touchdown!
We are looking forward to our upcoming presentation from the Reactory Factory STEM DJ duo on February 13th. If you would like to make a donation to help support this event please bring a check, cash in a sealed envelope or visit school pay! :)
First Grade
Mrs. Beckman’s class began the week by celebrating the 101st day of school dressed as the 101 dalmatians! We also read Toad and Frog, and learned about pronouns in reading. In math, we continued to add two digit numbers by counting tens and ones. Have a wonderful weekend!
Ms. Molnar’s class is reading all about where our food comes from in ELA. We are learning about different ways that writers write, including to persuade, inform and entertain. We had so much fun celebrating the 101st day of school on Monday!
Ms. Kelly’s class is so excited to celebrate the 101st day of school! This week, we’ve been learning all about measuring items by weight and height as we celebrate being 101 days smarter. We are working on adding two digit numbers to two digit numbers, both with and without regrouping. We also read the story “Equal Schmequal” to learn about finding key details, summarizing a story, and retelling a story through writing.
Second Grade
Second grade is working on their Black History Month person in a bag projects where the students are researching different historical and important people related to black history. These projects will be displayed at our upcoming Black History Night at school.
Second grade is learning about living and nonliving things in science this chapter. Ms. Wolf’s class went on a nature walk around campus to find, observe, and discuss the different living and nonliving things they found.
Mrs. Cybulski’s class is expecting their eggs to hatch starting this Friday. They have been patiently waiting the hatching of their baby chicks.
Third Grade

Mr. Nemcik’s class is learning about about fractional equivalents, motion of objects, and using text information with non-fiction texts. We have been practicing and demonstrating our skills through our cooperative learning structures.
In Mrs. Michaud’s class, students have been hard at work! This week they focused on informational text structures as they wrap up their month-long Holocaust unit; they will be moving to study slavery and the Civil Rights Movement next in honor of Black History Month. They have also been focusing on planning in Writing, and are wrapping up their unit on customary and metric conversions in Math. In Science, they discussed why stars move in the sky and are learning about the moon phase cycle. In Social Studies, they discussed the role of Florida in the Civil War. For FSA Fun Day, they discussed analyzing literature, place value of whole numbers, comparing whole numbers, and the difference between a debit and a credit card for financial literacy.
Mrs. Michaud’s class has also been given the responsibility of piloting Google Classroom for the remainder of the school year, and that has been going great! They have been experimenting with a flipped classroom model as well as numerous other tech tools with this application. Mrs. Michaud looks forward to discussing this in more detail during Family Technology Night next month!
For the 100th day of school celebration, 4th grade elected to switch it up and dress like the 1980’s to celebrate 80 days of school until summer.

Orca's Core Values and character Education
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!
