Searching for Energy Vampires
Green Teams at Charles Boehm Middle School and Afton Elementary School recently conducted an energy audit at both buildings. Todd Rogers, a Certified Energy Manager, who worked with the National Energy Education Development Project to establish and manage a K-12 Energy Education Program, led the students on their audit. He provided them with light meters, kilowatt meters, and other tools for the audit. They were also joined by Pennsbury School Board Directors Gary Sanderson and Linda Palsky.
The students combed the schools looking for "Energy Vampires" and ways to be smart about energy use, using enough but not too much to maximize the learning environment.
Based on their findings, students submitted recommendations for improving school energy efficiency.
Edgewood Science Fair
Students at Edgewood Elementary School tapped into their inner scientists for the school's science fair. The Edgewood PTO organized the event. In addition to student presentations and experiments, parents ran demonstration booths to show students different scientific concepts and serve as mentors. Some parents also talked to students about their roles in science-related fields.
Native American History at Eleanor Roosevelt
Third-grade students at Eleanor Roosevelt Elementary School recently wrapped up the Native American history portion of their Social Studies Curriculum with a presentation by the Ladies of History. The assembly focused on the life and legacy of Mary Jemison, who “grew up as an adopted Seneca, becoming one of them and choosing to remain with the tribe all her adult life." The Seneca were part of the Iroquois Confederacy or the Haudenosaunee- People of the Longhouse.
Students learned some Seneca language phrases, the importance of Native American contributions, the incredible time Jemison lived, including the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War, and why she chose to remain a Seneca.
Lots of Benergy at Makefield!
On Wednesday, April 5, Makefield Elementary School was thrilled to welcome autism advocate and motivational speaker Ben Hartranft for his second visit to the school. Ben shared his inspiring story of overcoming challenges and emphasized the importance of kindness and inclusion toward individuals with autism. He also joined Makefield students on their annual friendship walks, energizing and inspiring everyone with his infectious "Benergy." To top it off, Ben even made a half-court shot during the teachers vs. students March Madness Showdown! It was an unforgettable day, and Makefield is grateful for the positive impact Ben continues to have on our school community.

Penn Valley Buddies Math Egg Hunt
To celebrate Spring, 5th-graders at Penn Valley Elementary School hid Math-eggs for their 2nd grade buddies. Second-graders needed to add, subtract, and compare as they hunted for eggs on this beautiful day!
After some math fun, students created spring drawings using sidewalk chalk and enjoyed the fresh air. Students always enjoy working together to enhance our Penn Valley community!

Math with a Cause at Penn Valley
Penn Valley Elementary School students recently raised just over $1,500 for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The school's Math-a-Thon and Student Council's "Coins for a Cause" joined forces to collect the funds to support this great cause and make a difference in the lives of children battling pediatric cancer. Great job, Penn Valley!
In addition to the fundraiser, Penn Valley's Math Club participated in a Math Madness bracket in March, using the card game Math 24. 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students went head to head against each other each week. Congratulations to Penn Valley's "Elite Eight" winners: Robbie Walker, Donnie Parker, Lucie Haba, MacKenzie Alioto, Scarlett Toth, Autumn Doyle, Carter Vergantino, and Dylan Kelsch.
Math Madness at Fallsington
Fallsington Elementary participated in a month-long March Mathness program. Students in every grade level completed a math fluency mad minute each week. Students practiced their math skills and improved their average weekly. As a culminating activity the school came together to shoot hoops. High scoring classrooms shot foul shots against their teachers to celebrate March Mathness!
