Around the School Spotlight
For the month of February, our newsletter will highlight important aspects of our school community! Each week will celebrate different people or things happening at Hawks View. We are excited to share with you all of the incredible opportunities that our kids have. First up is….Celebrating Hawks View….a glimpse into the programs and specials that we offer.
Dual Language Immersion (DLI) Program
A unique program in the Sherwood School District is our Dual Language Immersion (DLI) program. This program is an integral part of Hawks View and primarily serves students within our boundary. When additional spots remain in each section, they are awarded (through a lottery) to students outside of the Hawks View boundary.
In a DLI program, at least half of the instruction is taught in Spanish, with the other half in English.
In Kindergarten & First grades, instruction is 80% Spanish and 20% English; with a reduction of Spanish and an increase in English from 2nd grade on. Students are taught and assessed using the same grade-level standards as their peers in English-only classes.
One of the main aims of the program is for students to learn to read, write, listen and speak in Spanish & English. Each class is taught by a bilingual educator with the support of bilingual instructional assistants. We love what this program adds to our school community!

~First Grade - Mrs. Matthews
~Second Grade - Mrs. Wilcox
~Third Grade - Mrs. Slezak
~Instructional Assistants - Mrs. Wallace, Mrs. Avila Lopez, Mrs. Carnevale, Mrs. Augilar
STEM (Mrs. Bretsch)
The purpose for our K-5 STEM program is to increase students' critical thinking and creativity , as well as grow students’ communication and collaboration skills. Our hands-on science, technology and engineering activities are very engaging for children and make learning fun. We focus on high level academic vocabulary and age appropriate learning goals to push students to problem solve with a team. Students have built prototypes, models, and coding sequences to demonstrate their learning as well as performed scientific exploration in a lab setting. They are introduced to real world purposes for their learning and people who are leaders in the fields of STEM. Our mission is to foster a life-long love of STEM learning for my students and help them to make a connection between what we are doing in elementary school to what they can do in middle school, high school, and beyond.
PE (Mr. Pulfrey)
The goal of the Hawks View PE program is for all students to cultivate a passion for being physically active, while also having an understanding of why it is essential to live a healthy lifestyle by the time they leave for middle school. Mr. Pulfrey focuses on introducing as many traditional and non-traditional physical activities as possible, because each individual is so unique, and knowing there are so many ways to continue being physically active is what is most important to him. Some of his favorite non-traditional activities that students experience include, unicycles, rock climbing, juggling, dance and scooters. They will also be taught vital basic sports skills that translate directly towards many of the sports and activities students will participate in as they continue to grow. This holistic view of physical activity gives students the tools they will need to pursue their own passions for being active throughout their lifetime.
Music (Mrs. Aldinger)
The music program at Hawks View elementary has grown and expanded over the past decade. We are so thankful to SEF, VPA, Beta Beta and the HV PAC for the dozen plus grants that have been written and funded since 2014! Because of these amazing support groups, the HV music room has added the entire World Music Drumming curriculum and instruments; a classroom set of Appalachian Dulcimers; carts and tables so the xylophone/bar and mallet instruments can be easily and quickly moved; a classroom set of Ocarinas and numerous other smaller percussion instruments!
Every day Mrs. Aldinger arrives to a happy-teaching-space and is VERY aware of the gifts from all this funding! With 70 students participating this year, the HV choir has also grown in size and enthusiasm! They especially enjoy getting to travel and sing for our older friends at our local retirement venues. The feeling goes both ways – after the choir sang in December, they were IMMEDIATELY invited back to sing again in the Spring! All of these things make Mrs. Aldinger’s ‘music teacher heart happy’! Thank you!
Hawks Zone (Ms. Walker)
Hawks Zone is a space designed to facilitate social-emotional skill building. Students come individually or in small groups to practice identifying basic emotions in themselves and others, identifying strategies or tools they can use to manage their emotions, and practicing self-regulation activities. Every Wednesday, Hawks Zone hosts “Visitor Wednesday” where any student may be signed up for an opportunity to visit the room. Also, as an extension of Hawks Zone, kindergarten and 1st-grade social groups are taught reinforcing foundational social skills to help them become successful students and community members. We are so fortunate to have this opportunity for students in our school!
