Gompers ...#180daysofwhy..#students
THEORY of ACTION
Gompers Team Members,
Friday...was another great day in #GATORNATION as #TEAMGOMPERS shined through!!
How did #Team Gompers shine through, you might ask?
TEAM GOMPERS implementation of GOOOOOOOOing GREEN was in full effect during grade level and department meetings:
G (GRIT) - Taking on this "new normal" with intensified commitment and focus, by giving it that good old college try and fighting hard for continued excellence in your role to deliver great learning opportunities.
R (RESPONSIBILITY) - Knowing that this is a completely new narrative, and saying "ok" I am an educator, I can do this for the students in whom I serve...I got this!! Consistently attending, the technology training offered, and just trying things out.
E (EXPECTATIONS) - Delving deeper and deeper into "synchronous" learning opportunities that set up intensified structures for student success remotely. Math Team all on the same page with Grade Books and Publishing work assignments for feedback to students/parents, 3-5 Band, reviewing past slide decks on discussing pros and cons of sychronous activities/platforms, MS ELA having the OCIPD curriculum leader to discuss resources and access issues.
E (ETHICS) - Learning, Leading, and Doing "this new narrative" with PASSION...#thewhy.
N (Neighborly) - Being active resources to one another...not just sharing apps or programs, but sharing screens and taking your colleagues through how to log in, how the program is used, the pros and the cons, etc. Additionally, organically setting up your own "professional development" times with one another to support in "APPY HOUR". Lastly, helping the PE department with the distribution of PE clothes to ensure, social distancing guidelines adhere.
I can't say anything but say THANK YOU for STEPPING UP to this "UNBELIEVABLE" Challenge as EDUCATORS, you all are simply doing #AMAZING and I value and respect your efforts and work!
There are a couple of things as we enter this week:
1. I will email tentative assignments for this upcoming year, 20-21.
2. I will be informing you of this week about coming to campus/staggered schedule to "possibly" clean your room and gather belongings.
3. Ms. Jean Henshall is supporting us in1st grade as Ms. Leckich is on personal leave.
4. Superintendent's financial message referenced Ms. Duran's position at our site. Our site will be affected by a reduction in service time (more details to come from level office).
5. SPED and IEPs, an update has just been released (4/23) for LBUSD to follow from CDE as we move forward for the remainder of the year. Information and its effects on the entire staff will be given once the FAQ has been developed by the district.
6. A new EXCEL document will be sent this week, for students who have not logged in or who have not completed in assignments. Ms. Duran and Ms. Frank have been calling/contact to parents based on the initial list.
7. 6th & 7th-grade elective choices were sent to paren's emails for students to complete a google form using their student portal. The form can only be accessed through the student's portal.
8. 5th-grade parents were notified on Friday, April 24th of their child's placement for school. If a parent reached out to you, direct them to Ms. Frank or Ms. Jeanette.
9. Elementary teachers, please ensure you have read information and reaching out to Ms. Lucio and Ms. Yoon about how students can access the music program instruction.
10. Elementary teachers and MS ELA, please ensure you have communicated with Ms. Juarez she is setting up a schedule for returning books and adding support to you as needed for classrooms.
As we continually navigate this "newness", please reach out to me if there is anything that I can do to support your work.
Respectfully - Dr. Miller

Dr. J's Reflective words......Goooooo Gators!!!
What have you learned about your students during the school closure?
At first, my students were worried, confused, and uncertain whether or not Gompers was going to reopen. However, on the first day of online learning, they were very happy and excited to see me and their classmates. As each progressed it provided a level of stability not only for my students but the parents as well.
What have you learned about yourself as a teacher integrating more technology?
Given the present environment, I realized that my technology skills needed to improve quite a bit. There are so many alternative avenues of teaching that I am using that has really inspired my students. Google classroom has brought us closer together and allowed me to explore other teaching methods. In addition, integrating technology has allowed me to capture many of my traditional teaching methods in a digital framework. Moreover, it has provided a historical archive for my students to go back and practice each lesson as needed.
I miss the personal contact and interaction with the students. For special needs students, personal interaction provides reinforcement, improved fine motor skills, and social constructs that allow each student to develop alongside their general education peers.
What is one cool/fun thing that you and your family have done since school closure?
My family and I dusted off my sewing machine and created our own protective masks. This allowed us to work together and enjoy each other.
What makes you most proud to be a member of the #Gator nation?
I am proud of the way my colleagues, the students, and the parents work together towards a common goal. Teaching special education will always be a challenge but, with the support of our principal and staff, these challenges are much easier to overcome.
