The BBCHS Library's celebration of Black History Month has been a personal experience thanks to junior, Joya Adams.
Adams is continuing the tradition begun last year by now-alumna Cierra Macon of a student taking leadership in designing the library’s display window for Black History Month. Adams implemented her grand vision, bringing in several more students to make Black History Month in the Library something particularly meaningful to her and her fellow BBCHS students.
“I wanted to better represent black people,” Adams said. “School really only teaches us about Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and Harriet Tubman. To know for myself, I had to study on my own people like Malcolm X, Sista Souljah, and Ruby Bridges.”
The project Adams designed for the display window included a rotating display that changed weekly during February. During each week, she displayed photos and biographical information of successful people of color who fit her weekly theme and who represented many different professions and accomplishments.“I am hoping this window will show black students our influence in more than sports and entertainment, that we can be anything: doctors, lawyers, authors, activists, college graduates, the possibilities are endless,” Adams said.
Her first theme was entitled “Black Excellence” and featured such icons as U.S. Representatives Shirley Chisholm and John Lewis, neurosurgeon Dr. Alexa Canady, activist/author/historian W.E.B. DuBois, and tennis legend and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Arthur Ashe. Her other themes borrowed the hashtags #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackBoyJoy and highlighted a broad range in each who made positive contributions to their culture in areas including law and politics, fashion, sports, literature, entertainment, and others.
In addition to the famous people she chose to include, Adams also turned the spotlight on her fellow Boilermakers. She personally interviewed students to find out their thoughts on Black culture and leadership and the people they looked to for inspiration. With the assistance of library assistants Sherry Denault and Lisa Hampton, Adams then featured the students’ photos and quotes about what makes Black History Month meaningful to them as part of the window display. Students featured include freshmen Daishia Whiters and Victoria Jones and fellow juniors Shale Johnson, Anthony Williams Jr., Brandon Jones, and Jimmy Bynum.
The project, done entirely in her limited free time, has been well received, and Adams hopes it can begin conversations that will help lead to better experiences for current and future BBCHS students from all backgrounds. “There has been an overall positive response from my peers,” she said. “I want to spark conversations at home and school so that we learn more about our culture and one other to bridge the gap between knowledge and ignorance.”

BBCHS Robotics Ironclad FTC goes to State!
BBCHS robotics team, Ironclad FTC 12868 builds a robot that has to start inside an 18” cube, then expand by their design once the game begins. Our team plays in a league of 23 South Suburban teams, we had sub-league meets in October, November, and December where we played against 11 of those teams and our ranking position rose or fell according to the results of those 15 matches. Ironclad FTC went 14-0-1 during those 3 qualification meets and was ranked 1st in our sub-League and 3rd overall in the League. The team is directly coached by Monica Johnson, a parent of students on our FRC Team, and Ed Nowman, also related to students on our team.
Saturday, February 18, Ironclad FTC attended the League championship where all 23 teams gathered and played five more Qualifying matches, had judging interviews, followed by the top 4 ranked teams becoming alliance captains, selecting team mates to play with and going through Elimination rounds to find the League Champions. They went 4-1-0 during the Qualifiers and finished 2nd overall in the league, becoming the #2 Alliance Captains! The all-freshmen team made it into the Finals round and ended up losing 2 matches to 1 in a hard-fought best of 3.
The Ironclad team was awarded the Inspire Award at the award ceremony. This is the top award available to an FTC team and automatically qualified us for The State Championship in Elgin on February 24th! The State Championship consists of 44 teams divided into two divisions of 22 (randomly assigned). Each division plays qualification matches to determine their overall rankings for the tournament. Throughout the days, teams rose and fell in the rankings as they played matches. By the end of qualification matches BBCHS Ironclad FTC were ranked 2nd in our division!
Because of Ironclad FTC's ranking they became the #2 Alliance captain and were able to draft their team with the other 3 teams chosen as captains. The playoff matches began and pit #1 against #4 in a best of 3 set of games and #2 against #3. The games are still each 2 vs 2, so the Alliance captains have to decide which 2 robots play in each game, but each robot is required to play at least once.
BBCHS Ironclad won the Semi-Finals round by beating the #3 alliance and was to take on the #1 Alliance in the Finals for the division. BBCHS Ironclad FTC lost in the Finals round, qualifying as “division finalists”, but the #1 alliance was crowned division champions.
During the awards ceremony, Ironclad FTC was honored again to receive the “Highest Rookie Seed Award” and the “Outstanding Rookie Award”! A wonderful job by students: Emma Hoskins, Evan Clark, Nate Foor, Jacob Wolf, Connor Skoumal, Kalen Dunn, Creighton Boswell, or Robert Johnston! Great job, Boilers!
