My Philosophy of Teaching
There is a quote about teaching I have always loved…
"Calling on teachers to change invites the humiliation of becoming a raw novice at a new trade after having become a master craftsman at an old one."
Robert Evans, The Human Side of Change
This profession we are called to is as much about change in oneself as it is about changing the minds and lives of the students we reach. Teaching is wrought with change; to pedagogy, to mindset, to skill, to community, to students. As the quote from Robert Evans points out, change can invite “humiliation.” I challenge that it can also invite invigoration.
As we ask the students we engage with daily to be excited about new learning and to believe they can take this new knowledge and change the world they will live in, so should we as educators embrace our roles as learners. To teach is to be able to see through the eyes of the learner -to assume a learner stance- and use the perspective to inform our teacher moves. We then know what pieces of information to give to the students we serve to allow them to explore and synthesize for new meaning.
To teach is to build trust, listen, and allow student voice to inspire what learning looks like in our classrooms.
To teach is to foster independence through appropriate rigor and productive academic struggle.
To teach is to live in questions and inquiry as much as in “the answer.”
To teach is to take risks and be brave when it comes to doing what is best for kids.
No one can accomplish these things in isolation. This profession begs for a collaborative spirit. We must be willing to share success and struggle with those who can support and celebrate. Only then can we truly center ourselves in what we believe about education, remain connected with like minds who keep us passionate and inspired, and feel compelled to challenge ourselves and the students we teach to aspire to something greater than what is.
