Oakhurst Elementary
November 12, 2020
From the Principal
Dear Oakhurst Community,
There are many moving parts as we plan for the eventual future return of students for in-person learning. What I want to share with you today is a document called the Oakhurst Return to In-Person Learning Procedures. This is a living document that will continue to be updated as we receive information and better practices are created. In short, this is the guide for how Oakhurst will potentially operate when in-person learning begins. CSD principals have been working collaboratively to create the basics of these plans. Then the Oakhurst COVID Readiness team, SLT, and some teaching staff provided some feedback.
Our in-person procedures document is currently in DRAFT form because it is consistently being tweaked and edited. However, we wanted to give you a preview of some of the details we are planning. The narrated slideshow we shared earlier, along with this document and other reopening information we create will be uploaded to the new section of the school’s website. When our instructional plan is complete it will be added as well. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns or feedback regarding our reopening draft.

What's Up Wednesday: Staying Strong Together":1st-grade next week, 11/18 at 10 am
Oakhurst's school counselor, Laura Deming, and school nurse, Dawn Durham, are teaming up to offer a voluntary Google Meet on Wednesdays for a 'grade level get-together' supporting wellness and health. Our hopes are to combine mini lessons/stories with a Q&A session, followed by open-air time at the end. We look forward to this opportunity for students to connect with their peers in a lightly-structured environment (with a little health and wellness thrown in). We have a separate Google Classroom created for What's Up Wednesdays that will have the link available for your student to join.
We had many 2nd-graders join us this week and next week, on Wednesday 11/18 at 10 am, we are meeting with all 1st-graders who are able to attend. We look forward to seeing our first-grade owls on Wednesday! Please email us with any questions/comments at ldeming@csdecatur.net or ddurham@csdecatur.net

Oakhurst Virtual Book Fair November 30 - December 4
We are so excited to be hosting an online book fair Nov. 30 - Dec. 4. Little Shop of Stories has worked hard to create an easy way to shop and purchase books while helping to support our school. If you need book suggestions, you can search for books by category directly on their website which can be found here. All orders over $25 ship for free or you can pick up the books at Little Shop of Stories. Just remember to include OAKHURST in the comments section at checkout so our school will get credit for the sale.

From the PTA
The Oakhurst PTA is excited to announce "Take Out Tuesdays"! Once a month, one of our generous neighborhood restaurants is partnering with our PTA, giving back a percentage of their evening's profits. Our first Take Out Tuesday will be next Tuesday, November 17th at SCOUT Restaurant.
That's right, the week before the biggest cooking week of the year, all you need to do is order take out to support your school! Just be sure to mention "Oakhurst Elementary" either when placing the order or picking up. And don't forget ... libations also available to go! Please see the attached flyer.

CSD Special Education November Virtual Meetings
Decatur Education Foundation News
In non-pandemic years, we would be gearing up for our big fall party, Supper & Sips. Since we can't gather together in support of Decatur's kids to enjoy some delicious local food, drinks and fun games, we're launching our "Just Another Thursday Night at Home." While you won't enjoy the party and camaraderie of the Supper this year, you can still have that great feeling of fellowship by supporting our families with a gift to DEF. To participate: put on your jammies, pour yourself a beverage, get cozy on the sofa and click here.
You can have a profound impact on a Decatur student in just 2-4 hours per month. How? By becoming a mentor for our AIM Scholars Program that pairs adult mentors with third-grade students who “meet” regularly throughout the year. Mentors help connect their mentees with educational and enrichment activities so they can find their passions and develop life skills. For more information, please visit decatureducationfoundation.org/mentoring.

A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur
A Season of Giving/Christmas Decatur is beginning preparations for our 26th year of service to the City of Decatur community. As with everything else in 2020, this program will be a little different than we are used to! Due to the pandemic, we will be changing our program to be managed online. If your family would like to request assistance with holiday gifts for children who live with you, through 8th grade, you must complete the SurveyMonkey application by November 15: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2020ASeasonofGiving If you have trouble with the form, questions, or concerns, please email us at aseasonofgiving@decaturga.com or call our voicemail, 404-378-8068, and leave a message. For those families who do not need assistance, and would like to participate, we would love your help! We have changed how we will handle the program for 2020. We will not be collecting physical gifts but providing gift cards to the families requesting assistance. If you would like to help us this year, please donate at https://legacydecatur.com/give/. Please select ‘A Season of Giving / Christmas Decatur’ for the organization in the donation form.
