Red Ribbon Week is Next Week!
Red Ribbon Week is October 24th – October 28th. The Red Ribbon campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation, reaching millions of young people during Red Ribbon Week each year. Our school plans to encourage students to respect themselves and make safe choices, by promoting awareness and emphasizing the importance of staying drug free! We will have themed dress days, outlined in the flyer.
Book Character Day
As part of our Literacy Celebration, Hembree Springs Elementary is very excited to announce that on Friday, October 28, 2022, we will be hosting a Story Book Character Day! On this day the staff and students may dress up as their favorite story book character. We are asking that the character come from a book that your child reads and loves (not just from a movie or cartoon.)
Please work with your child to plan a fun and simple homemade costume. We are asking that you work together to be creative with items around the house versus spending money on a store-bought costume. Your child may bring a copy of the book to class that day so that we can take part in several character study activities!
To ensure students’ feelings of safety and security, violent or frightening costumes are not acceptable. No props, dangerous-looking items, or costume masks covering the face.
Treats for Troops
The PE Department is wanting to keep our students healthy during this candy filled time of year. Have your child bring in 15- 20 pieces of their Halloween candy in a bag to the PE teachers during the time of Oct. 24th – Nov. 4th. This candy will be donated to the men and women in the military.
FCS Student Technology Competition
We are looking for tech savvy 3rd -5th grade Hawks to represent Hembree Springs at this fun event! Students can work individually or with one partner to create a project using a tech tool of choice. Check out the CATEGORY LIST in the Tech Competition Details link below. The event will take place at Riverwood HS on Saturday December 10th, and you will be given a timeslot for your child to present.
While this is a project that would be made at home with parent supervision and guidance, Mrs. Anderson is your go- to liaison so reach out at www.andersoncm@fultonschools.org as needed. November 11th is the DEADLINE to contact Mrs. Anderson and turn in THIS SIGNED REGISTRATION FORM and THIS COPOYRIGHT VERIFICATION FORM . This is a great chance for students to show their appreciation for their favorite tech skills using tech tools of choice. Even more, they experience real competition in a safe environment with Fulton Teachers from across the district to support and encourage their efforts. Let’s GO Hawks!! Letter from Ms. Smith
Hello Parents and Families!
This week I wanted to share about two people that I got to celebrate a week ago with the rest of Fulton County Schools. . These two people exemplify a heart for students. Every decision that they make is for students. They see each of their students as person that deserves kindness, respect, and love. These women have high expectations but also meet each student where they are. When you go into their classroom they engage every student through movement, high quality lessons, differentiation and scaffolding. (Educationese translation: differentiation: meeting the needs of all students; scaffolding: layered supports that promote mastery).
Students describe these women as: “nice,” “cares a lot,” and “has a pretty smile.” Their smiles light up a room because of the love that shines straight to students’ hearts. Michelle Leatherman, Teacher of the Year, and Erica Butcher, Professional of the Year, are shining examples of all of our staff.
In full transparency, this year has been harder than any COVID year. This year has been filled with as many tears as laughter for our staff. The expectation to make up the learning loss, new curriculum, and pressure from outside forces to be perfect, has made it difficult to feel like we are making a difference. These two women remind me that the work our teachers and staff do matters! We are making a difference. Hembree Springs is the greatest elementary school because of the students, families, and staff! Join me in celebrating Michelle Leatherman, ESOL teacher, and Erica Butcher, kindergarten assistant, with their honor of teacher and professional of the year for Hembree Springs. They are wonderful representatives of all our staff. I have said it before, this is the best community to serve and I am honored to do so.
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith
