Varsity Girls Place 2nd in LSAA Tourney

The girls varsity basketball team played in the LSAA basketball tournament that ended last weekend. On Saturday they played against Woodburn and won 27-24 to earn an berth in the championship game against Wyneken on Sunday.

In the championship game the girls came out strong and led 17-8 at halftime. Wyneken gave the Lady Tigers a game in the second half which the Tigers couldn't quite overcome. The final score of the game was 23-22. The SJE Tigers took second place in the LSAA tournament. Great showing girls! Let's go get 'em at state!

Enrolling Soon!

It's hard to believe that it's almost time to think about next school year. Current families will receive paperwork heading into the week of March 5th. There will be no personal registration appointments this year unless you want one. More details to follow the first of March.

New families will have the opportunity to register for 18-19 starting the week of March 19th once current families have had their opportunity.

If you want more information, please contact Axel Gruen at 260-639-0123 or email to

Mrs. Harris Returning

I'm excited to announce that Mrs. Harris will be returning from maternity leave on Tuesday February 20th. We are all excited to have her back. I'm sure the kids will be very excited to see Mrs. Harris too!

Thanks so much Mrs. Comer for doing such a great job in her absence.

3rd Quarter Chapel Offering Project

Our 3rd quarter chapel offering project has begun. We are going to be working on Personal Care Kits through Lutheran World Relief. As of this newsletter we have enough for several kits already. We could always use more.

Please consider donating the items on the list or cash for the chapel offering. We will use the cash to buy what we need to complete kits. Here is a link to the site so you can see what is needed and other details. Here is the link: Lutheran World Relief.

"School to School" Project Results

SJE has chosen to adopt Memorial Lutheran School in Houston Texas as part of the LCMS School to School project. This has significance as this is the school our 5th grade teacher Mrs. Muehl's daughter teaches. Memorial Lutheran was the mission focus during National Lutheran School Week last week. We held a coin war and the kids made cookies that were available last Sunday with a free will offering. Both congregations were very generous in their donations. We received $169 for the cookies.

We don't have the rest of the money from the coin war totaled as of this newsletter. As soon as we do, I'll communicate our final numbers. Thank you to all who made this a great event helping those at Memorial Lutheran affected by Hurricane Harvey.

SGO Credits Almost Gone for 2017!

This year our SGO donations are continuing to come in! The school's need this year is about $18,000, of which we already have over $14,000. We have over 30 students who benefit from this scholarship annually. It was projected the credits would be gone by Christmas, but good news, there are still some left!

Our final date to request our funds for the SGO scholarships is just prior to March 15th. Prayerfully the balance we need will be donated. I will be putting in the request for funds (whatever is in the account at the time) prior to that date and if there is not enough, figure out how to allocate what we do have.

If you do not know what an SGO is, it is a scholarship fund solely dependent on individuals, businesses and farmers who donate to the fund and direct it to the school(s) of their choice. Donors receive a 50% Indiana state income tax credit and if the donation is larger than your tax in a given year, you can roll it over for up to 9 years. This year the tax credits were increased from $9 million to $12.5 million.

There are so many way to give. Make sure you take advantage of your opportunity to receive not only a tax credit but a great feeling that your gift helps students continue to receive a Christian education.

Please tell others about this great opportunity and consider giving yourself. Go to www.lutheransgo,org to find out more and donate to SJE.

SJE Endowment

The SJE endowment fund has been around for some time. It is finally at a point that the school can begin using it. That means more now than ever before. contributions made to this fund, make a difference. Also, at the beginning of this school year, the Lutheran Foundation ties grant funds the school receives to donations made to our endowment. In other words, every dollar donated to the SJE endowment is, one, matched into our endowment and, second is a dollar available for the school via the day school grant. In the past that amount has averaged $23,000 each school year. The funds were used for technology upgrades as well as any other classroom or school needs.

This grant, and the endowment fund have become very valuable to the school. So, please consider giving to our endowment fund so that the school has money to apply for to be used in an upcoming school year and long term from our endowment fund. If you have any questions about the endowment, please contact Axel Gruen in the school office at 260-639-0123 or email to
