Fire Drill Feedback from 9/4/2020
- Thank you for your work during the fire drill. You and your students did an excellent job for our first drill. After the drill, Mike, Sue and Sadie (Front of the building), Adrienne (K-Preschool wing) and I (1st grade wing), debriefed to create a list of things that went well and a few reminders.
Positive/+
- Students walked quietly in the halls.
- Students had on masks in the halls while exiting.
- Teachers moved students quickly to the correct areas beyond the black playground fence.
- Teachers took attendance and clearly held up the red or green card to indicate attendance.
- Teachers with red cards reported missing students.
- Students stood in lines facing teachers and teachers were facing the building.
- Students remained in line until the "all clear" was given.
- Total Time from end of announcement to all checks completed for students 4:26:81.
Improvements/Delta
- Please continue to use the red card if you have a special education student on your classroom roster but is with the special education team during the drill or event. Continue to report these students as missing to Adrienne and me so that we can account for them with Sue and Sadie in the front of the building.
- To improve our speed exiting the building, Mike suggested that we try to have students exit in two lines through each grade-level door, one line exiting through the right door of the exit and one line exiting through the left door of the exit.

NEE Observation Standards and Tips
NEE 3.1 Implements curriculum standards
The teacher implements instruction that strongly aligns with district curriculum map or pacing guides or with state curriculum guidelines throughout almost all of the learning experience.
In the classroom, this might look like:
Teacher strongly aligns almost all learning experiences with learning standards
Teacher discusses alignment of activities and standards with students
Teacher is able to evaluate the appropriateness of a curriculum
NEE 2.5 Builds on students' prior experiences, learning strengths and needs
The teacher communicates an awareness of students' prior knowledge and almost always begins learning activities by activating prior knowledge (or considers the prior knowledge of almost all the students). The teacher clearly builds on prior knowledge to create a strong web of knowledge with many connections.
In the classroom, this might look like:
Teacher activates prior knowledge of almost all students
Teacher makes many connections to knowledge web
Teacher refers strongly and repeatedly to content from other lessons or units
Teacher builds on the experiences of each student and adapts lessons as needed
In the early childhood classroom, the teacher consistently builds on learners’ prior knowledge and experience
A student might say this about the teacher:
connects what we are learning with things we already know
reminds us of things we learned earlier
begins lessons by asking what we already know about a subject
NEE 4.2 Appropriately uses instructional resources to enhance student learning
The teacher effectively uses developmentally appropriate instructional resources to enhance learning for students. Many partner districts are particularly emphasizing use of electronic materials in the classroom as they are moving toward one-to-one technology. Almost all U.S. classrooms have computers and Internet access. In some ways technology is simply another tool in the classroom, much like paper or a whiteboard. Technology also affords unique opportunities, such as allowing virtual field trips across the globe, simulating experiments, or contributing to digital books, blogs, and wikis. Students learn more in classrooms with technology when it is used in effective ways.
In the classroom, this might look like:
Teacher uses available technological tools and communication strategies to engage most students, and to assist them in becoming critical users of quality information
Teacher develops learning processes that students can use to build prior knowledge into more advanced applications
Teacher takes maximum advantage of the potential resources for enhancing student learning
Teacher sets up lessons so that students use resources in a meaningful way. Instructional resources may include technology, online resources, primary source documents, manipulatives, supplementary readings, video or audio, etc.
A student might say this about the teacher:
uses lots of different things to help us learn (such as readings, maps, or objects)
uses the things in this classroom in ways that help us learn
uses materials in class that help us understand the subject
