Peek at the Week
Week of 2/5/2018
Shepherd Middle School in the News
Last week during a PLC time, we met in the WAR ROOM to choose students for Spring tutoring groups after school. As we look at the students who were chosen by myself, the IC's, Mr. Rehorst (math interventionist) and you, the teacher, we need to remember why and how they were chosen. It was apparent that there was some confusion around this so I am hoping to clear this up.
School focus: ELL's and SpED- specific Professional Development has been delivered to the staff of SMS to allow for differentiation of teaching for the varied needs of students. The expectation is that lessons be developed using strategies to reach all students.
Accountability Indices: The new system from the state has us focusing on 3 percentages- Approaches, Met and Masters. It is the average of these three that determine SMS's Report Card Grade. ALL students need to grow for us to be a successful campus.
Thresholds: There are dividing lines identified by different colors of tape on the walls in the WAR ROOM. These match the new accountability index thresholds. We need to pay attention to those students who have fallen a threshold or two AND those who are climbing! Ask students questions, meet with them individually. Establish a mentality of GET ONE MORE.
Data Talks Forms: The requirement for the 2nd form for the year was centered around whether or not there was improvement made on the initial goal. All need to be submitted to me for review.
In closing, we need to do the following:
- KNOW which students are amongst our focal sub pops,
- Differentiate for all students and
- Foster within the students, "get one more."
