First Grade Newsletter
Welcome to First Grade!
Below you will find important information such as updates, field trips, special events, etc. that will occur each month.
First Grade Team:
Mrs. Geoffrion, Miss Weir, Ms. Shirley, Miss Kee, Mrs. Wharton, Ms. Nelms, Mrs. Harrison
What are we learning this month?
- Place value to 110
- Addition/Subtraction word problems
- Estimation to 120
In literacy, we are working on reading and spelling the 109 Power words. Practicing these at home will be beneficial to your scholar's reading and writing skills. Make a game of it! Hide words at night before bed and let them go in with a flashlight and find them. If they can read the words, replace them with new ones. Use shaving cream in a baggie, write the words on jenga game pieces, a shoots and ladders game, or any other game preferred by your scholar.
*A copy of the power words will be included below.
Science and Social Studies:
In science, we are working on our unit about spring. We will also begin our unit on life processes of plants and animals.
First grade is a pivotal year as students go from making the connection of letters sounds being used to make words to reading. Please continue reading and practicing reading at home nightly.
We will continue to go outside as long as the wind chill is above freezing and there is no inclement weather. Please make sure that your child is wearing weather appropriate clothing. If your child does not have a coat/jacket, they will not be allowed to join their peers outside. If you need assistance with winter coats, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child's teacher and we will be more than happy to help!
This year, first grade has an early lunch. Due to this, we are encouraging parents/guardians to send in a snack that is separate from their child's lunch. We will have time set aside for students to eat their snack in the afternoon. If you would like to donate snacks to your child's classroom for students that may have forgotten one/are unable to bring one, it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
It is imperative that students are here at school everyday. If your child is sick and will not be at school, please contact your child's teacher and/or the front office to let them know.
