Curriculum Corner
Wordly Wise: We began working on Wordly Wise Unit 9 this week. Activities A & B will be due on 2/8. Next week, we will work on Activities C & D, which will be due 2/15. The test over this unit will be on Friday, 2/16.
Grammar: We have been working on finishing up adjectives this week. We will begin reviewing verbs next week.
Math:
Students took their Unit 4 assessment today. I will be sending their volume 1 Math Journals home tomorrow. These do not need to be returned to school! They will be working out of volume 2 for the rest of the year. We will begin Unit 5 tomorrow. The emphasis of this unit is fraction computation. We will work specifically on fraction decomposition, ways to create a whole, adding fractions, adding mixed numbers, and adding tenths and hundredths next week.
Reading:
We finished Wonder last week! One of the items I have donated for the silent auction this year is for a movie afternoon to see the new movie. I haven't seen it yet and look forward to watching it with some 4th grade friends! We have now started the novel Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix. She is a wonderful author for this age level. This book is set during a time when families are only allowed to have two children. Luke's family has three, so he must remain hidden so the Population Police don't find him. A new neighborhood is build behind his house and as he is peeking through a vent he discovers that there is another 3rd child living in one of the homes. The book tells the story of their friendship and the secret network of "hidden" children that exist.
Indiana History:
We will continue working on Unit 2 for Indiana History next week. Topics covered will include LaSalle and the fur trade, the French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War. The test over the last three lessons of this unit will be 2/22.
Science:
We are currently studying soil in our science unit. We will be examining types of dry soil, what soil is composed of, and how soil separates when it is mixed with water. Next week we will be studying physical weathering and observing how large rocks can be broken down into smaller rocks.
Valentine's Day - Help Still Needed!
As we look forward to celebrating Valentine's Day with our students at their classroom parties, this is a wonderful opportunity for us to emphasize the life skill of friendship with all of our students. As you are out shopping for Valentines to share with classmates, please select cards and/or trinkets that are inedible. This could include pencils, erasers, stickers, etc. Candy will not be distributed. Thank you for ensuring that all students can have a safe and fun celebration.
We have 27 students in our classroom and I will send home a class list on Friday. Students will need to bring a container to hold their Valentines on that day. In the past, some students have enjoyed decorating a box, while others have simply brought in a grocery bag. This is completely up to you and your child!
