Dear Parents-

We cannot thank you enough for the tremendous outpouring of appreciation and support we felt last week! We’re truly thankful for all of the gifts and cards we received from our amazing students throughout the week. You helped to make Teacher Appreciation Week very special for us both.

Testing! Testing! Read All About it!

Day one is in the books! WOW! We are proud of the hard work students put into their test today. Day 2 of Reading/Writing is Thursday and then Math will be next week. Thank you for your support at home with sending in headphones, assuring lots of sleep and a good breakfast. If you would like to send a bigger snack on testing days please do. Snacks with protein are always a good idea for heavy brainwork.

Math: All good teaching includes modifications. In the newsletter last week I said that we would be taking the math assessment in two sections. As we have been working I have realized that this would take more time than we have, so we are moving on with the unit. Yesterday they started the work with the decimals, this is lesson 7.8. Over the next couple of weeks our schedule is sporadic with testing and other events. I will do my best to keep you posted about our pace, but it will be pretty slow. I will send the second half of the homework home tomorrow.

Social Studies: This week we embark on our journey into Asia. I will introduce students to all of the different countries in Asia. Be on the lookout for more information about the at-home Asia project.

From Mrs. Johnson

Reading: We began our second reader’s workshop this week focusing on Asia. Students self-selected books and began reading them yesterday. Throughout this unit we will review skills like summarizing, identifying the theme of a story, and vocabulary.

Writing: Students are continuing to write their “Wacky Shoes” narrative and should finish up this week. Next week, we will begin our 4th and final writing unit called “The Literary Essay” which focuses on writing about our reading.
