I'm hopeful summer break is treating you well! As you are recharging your batteries, I wanted to offer some reminders about enrichment opportunities and contests.
JEA summer opportunities
Treat yourself to an outstanding learning experience July 11-14 in New Orleans
JEA Advisers Institute brings journalism teachers from across the country together for a week of adviser-specific training and networking.
Advisers Institute features writing guru Bobby Hawthorne as Thursday's keynote speaker.
Regardless of your experience level or the type of publications you advise, the Journalism Education Association Advisers Institute has programming specifically for you:
- differentiated instruction strategies
- technology in the classroom
- subject-specific professional learning community participation
- essential learner outcomes in a 21st-century classroom
- media literacy and ethical journalism practices
- preparation and testing for Certified Journalism Educator and Master Journalism Educator status

Share your expertise at the fall convention
The Fall JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention returns to St. Louis Nov 10-13.
Members, professional journalists and students in leadership positions are invited to submit convention program proposals for sessions at the Fall NHSJC. Proposals are due by Aug. 15.
Apply or nominate someone for these awards:
Administrator of the Year
For administrators who have demonstrated support and dedication to journalism education.
Rising Star trophies are given to advisers who are in their first five years of advising a media program and have shown great dedication to scholastic journalism and have had success advising at least one media program.
Carl Towley Award
The Carl Towley Award is JEA’s highest honor and is presented to a JEA member whose work is unusually beneficial and of superior value to the national JEA and to scholastic journalism.
Medal of Merit
Medals of Merit are given to JEA members who have made significant contributions to JEA. Members are encouraged to nominate deserving individuals.
Friend of Scholastic Journalism
Nominate a professional journalist or professional media outlet making a significant contribution to scholastic journalism.
Future Journalism Teacher Scholarships
For education majors who intend to teach scholastic journalism.
Georgia Scholastic Press Association news and notes
GSPA is now accepting General Excellence and Individual Award contest entries for yearbooks and literary magazines published in the 2021-22 academic year.
There are two special Individual Award categories this year: COVID Reporting and Social Justice Reporting.
The deadline to submit to the contests is July 31, 2022. Please email email@example.com to request accommodations if your books will be delayed or delivered later in the summer. Requests must be received no later than July 31, 2022. Awards will be announced at the Fall Conference Sept. 20, 2022, at the UGA Tate Student Center.
Membership is required to enter all GSPA competitions. All memberships expire at the end of current academic year.
Applications are open for student ambassadors
Energetic and engaged students interested in expanding their leadership skills, bringing a new vision and shaping GSPA are invited to apply to be part of the GSPA Student Ambassadors program. Applications are due Aug. 19.
Fall conference date announced
Mark your calendars for the next Fall Conference Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, at the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center. The event will feature several rounds of concurrent sessions covering a variety of topics of importance to scholastic journalists and advisers. Conference extras will include on-the-spot critiques and contests, as well as the first edition competition.
