Congratulations to our UIL participants who competed this week! We are proud of your hard work and dedication!
The Valentine's Party will be held on February 12th at 1:30 p.m. We will celebrate the afternoon with a Minute-to-Win-It tournament and a make-your-own snack mix bag. Snacks and games will be held in students' individual classrooms the first half of the party. Finals of the tournament will be held in the library where everyone can fit. PTA needs our help to make Carnival a success! This year, our themed basket to support PTA is Outdoors/Gardening, Please feel free to donate items and/or gift cards to make our basket desirable for the bidders. Students may start bringing items now. The deadline for donations April 1st.

In the Classroom:
Language Arts - The students worked really hard this past week on their Writing Benchmark. Talk to your child about how they felt about it and what his or her strategy was when completing the test. We don't want students to stress over the test, so encourage them and share how you deal with situations that may worry you. We will reflect on our Expository writing and work on ways we can make it even better through the revising/editing process. In reading, we will work summarizing fiction text, using the "SWBTS" (Somebody Wanted But Then So) framework.
Math - Students continue working on finding area and perimeter, and representing decimal fractions. We also are spending a lot of time on word problems. Math happens in the form of word problems in real life. Help your student understand your thinking related to mathematical situations when they come up in real life -- in the car, at the store, while budgeting or planning your schedule. Seeing you work through math in everyday situations will help your child grasp what we are doing in class. Another great way to support at home is to play games. For more information about the module, view the parent letter. Continue studying multiplication facts and logging into Stride Academy for individualized support. Study ideas here.
Science - We begin our unit on soil. Students will be observing and describing the properties of different types of soil through investigations and writing. Talk to your child about how you take care of your yard/garden to enrich the soil with nutrients the plants need and how you protect the soil from weathering and erosion.
Social Studies - We are learning about the Texas Revolution and the Alamo, discussing why the Texans wanted independence from Mexico and how the war developed. We will begin a unit on the Alamo.
