STEAM CITY BOYD
5TH GRADE STEAM EXPERIENCE
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are excited to let you know that 5th Grade students are headed to the Allen ISD STEAM Center this Spring either virtually, if in an at-home classroom, or in person, if you’re in an on-campus learning classroom. This innovative facility supports high school students in STEAM-related coursework, while also providing the district with its own field experience site for fifth grade. STEAM learning is an interconnected approach to learning science, technology, engineering, art, and math. This removes the traditional barriers separating the disciplines as it seeks to take advantage of the similarities and interplay of skills and knowledge among these fields to weave together a rich and meaningful learning environment. Students in Grade 5 will experience cutting-edge learning, implemented through the Engineering Design Process as it connects to grade level standards in STEAM areas. Grade-level teachers accompany the students to the STEAM Center and actively engage in the facilitation of the designed learning experiences.
At this time, In Person 5th grade students will be the only elementary grade level visiting the Allen ISD STEAM Center this Spring. Our 5th grade At Home Learners will have a virtual experience with their At Home Teachers on their campus designated day.
If you would like more information about the AISD STEAM Center, please visit https://www.allenisd.org/steamcenter. Details of the visit can be found below. If you have any questions about your student’s visit to the STEAM center, please contact your student’s homeroom teacher.

FAQ
WILL COVID SAFETY PROTOCOLS BE UTILIZED? Yes, all district COVID protocols will be followed. We are planning to keep students in their cohorts that have been established by the campuses as they rotate between activities. Masks are required, enhanced social distancing is being planned, sanitizers available, and we will be utilizing spray sanitizers throughout the day. Lunch will be outside, weather permitting.
WHO CAN VISIT STEAM?: STEAM visits are available to all 5th grade IN-PERSON learners only. While we would like to see all students, at this time we are following ALLEN ISD COVID PROTOCOLS which allows us to see only in-person learners.
WHAT IF A PARENT DOES NOT WANT THEIR CHILD TO RIDE THE BUS?: This year due to COVID we are allowing parents to drop off/ pick up their child at STEAM once Campus administrators have spoken to the parents and approved this transportation need.
WILL 5TH GRADE VIRTUAL LEARNERS EXPERIENCE STEAM?: YES! STEAM has developed an at home curriculum kit. Parents will have the option to come to STEAM and pick up a kit to take home for their child, once completed parents will need to bring the kit back to STEAM. More information will be provided by your child's teacher near your scheduled date.
WHAT IF A PARENT HAS CHOSEN FOR THEIR IN-PERSON LEARNER TO NOT VISIT STEAM?: Our STEAM staff has developed a kit for any student who has chosen to stay at their home campus so that they can still experience STEAM.
WHAT IF A STUDENT FORGOT THEIR REUSEABLE WATER BOTTLE?: No worries. We will have water bottles for students who forget theirs at home; these can be refilled at our refillable water stations.
