ELA MCAS- March 26th and 27th
All tenth graders will be taking the English/Language Arts MCAS on March 26th and 27th, 2019. Beginning this year, the MCAS will be a computer based test. Each test session will begin promptly at 7:35 in their designated testing rooms. It is extremely important that students be present for school on these testing days. Additionally, information regarding online test preparation for students was mailed home, and students were given the information in school as well. Paper review packets will also be available for all semester 1 English students.
The online site for student practice is: http://mcas.pearsonsupport.com. Students should practice both the TestNav8 Student Tutorial as well as the English Language Arts Practice Tests.
If you have any questions regarding the MCAS, please contact Mrs. Smith at 596-9011 ext. 3831.
FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Important notes for winter & spring athletes and their parents –
Winter Athletes
Sports locks - On the last day of the winter season, you are to turn your sports lock into your coach, along with your home and away uniforms, and any other equipment issued by the Minnechaug athletic department. Your cooperation with this important task will be greatly appreciated. Any student-athlete who does not comply with this procedure within three days of the end of his/her respective season will be billed for all outstanding equipment.
Winter Sports Recap:
Our winter season has been a long one, but productive. We enjoyed bigger crowds at all of our ticketed events. It’s always a good thing when our student body supports their peers and works to create a game day environment that our student-athletes will never forget. Our winter teams did some special things this past season.
Girls Swimming and Diving won their 3rd consecutive Central/West Title and league championship by having an impressive undefeated season. Central/West titles for the medley relay team of Krystianna Strange, Sam VanZandt, Maggie Petruzzelli and Olivia Ranck. Maggie Petruzzelli set the school record in the 100 Breastsroke. Sam VanZandt won the 100 Free. The 200 Free relay team of Krystianna Strange, Sam VanZandt, Maggie Petruzzelli and Olivia Rank won a central/west title. At the state meet, that same relay team tied the school record in the 400 free relay.
Boys Swimming and Diving came in a tight second at the Central/West Sectionals. Many school records and western mass records and individual titles were achieved. Cameron Gilrein broke the school record for 6 dives. Chase Konstantakos won a central/west title in the 200 and 100 free and set the school record for the 200 Free. He also won a state title in the 500 free. Connor Richard set the school record for the 100 breaststroke in the central/west sectionals.
Wrestling enjoyed an increase in numbers this past season with the addition of a jv program. Sean Monteiro finished his storied career with 166 total wins. Jake Ice won a Western Mass Championship and State Championship at his weight class. Minnechaug even hosted our first ever Falcon Duals with 12 teams coming to compete. A huge success! Thank you to all our parents and indoor track program for working all day!
Ice Hockey was seeded 2nd in the West Championship and lost a hard fought game vs. Westfield in the Semi Finals in double overtime. Matt Kowal achieved his 100th career point this season as well.
Indoor Track competed very well this winter. Christian Fuehr set a school record in the 1000M and Julia Mastrio won the State D3 55M.
Our cheer program competed in 5 competitions this winter. Their performances were outstanding placing them 2nd in two competitions and 4th at the league championships despite their great performance.
Alpine Skiing had to battle some weather in order to complete their season. Grace Crochiere, Mike Streeter and Michelle Leckey qualified for the State Ski championships and the PVIAC individuals finally happened on March 7th!
Boys Basketball missed qualifying for the tournament by 2 games. Despite coming up short, they never gave up all year long and tried their best until the very last game even though it would not have qualified them for the tournament.
Girls Basketball is still playing as I write this, so stay tuned for their results. Serena Fiore became only the 3rd female in school history to achieve the 1,000 point mark.
Overall, this season was filled with tons of excitement and success. We personally thank all of the fans that came out in cold weather to support our student-athletes. Without your support, our program would not be what it is! We are Chaug!

NOTES FROM THE NURSE:
March is Vision Awareness Month!
Some tips to help protect your eyes from the strain and damage of electronic screens such as phones, tablets, and computers.
Blue Light Symptoms:
Digital eye strain
Dry eyes
Eye irritation
Blurred vision
Sleep problems
Headaches
Neck and shoulder pain
Quick Tips for protecting your eyes and monitoring electronic screen time:
Power down before you turn in: Try and turn your phone or computer off or on silent at least one hour before bed
Try the AOA 20-20-20 rule: when using any device try and take a 20 second break for every 20 minutes of screen time and look at something 20 feet away.
Make annual appointments with your eye doctor: early screening can help detect conditions earlier!
Adjust your device to fit your needs: Adjust the glare by adjusting the device setting or using a glare filter to decrease the amount of blue light reflected from the screen.
Know your family eye health history: Talk with your family about their eye health history. Since many eye diseases or conditions are hereditary, this will help to determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition.
Eat right to protect your sight! Try and eat a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables: especially dark leafy greens, also research shows eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids have eye health benefits.
Maintaining a healthy weight: Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you’re having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor.
Be cool and wear your shades. Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation.

Continued Health Office Reminders:
Student Health Screening – Postural screening (for scoliosis) is ongoing for ninth graders during their swimming block in gym class. Height & weight, vision, and hearing screening for all tenth graders was completed on January 8th and 9th and February 11th and 12th. All screening results are strictly confidential. If there is an area of concern we would have mailed a letter to you with referrals to appropriate health care providers. If you have concerns or questions regarding the results of your child's screening, please contact the nurses in the Health Office at 279-3815.
Cold and Allergy Medication – A reminder that Cold and Allergy medication (other than emergency type) is not available in the Health Office and must be taken at home if needed. We have a limited supply of cough drops, so we also ask students to bring their own to school after the first day of use. The best way to prevent the spread of colds is to practice good hand washing. Thank you for your help with this.
Flu and Flu-like Illness – we like to track how many people in the Minnechaug community have been diagnosed with the flu and flu-like illnesses. If your child is suffering from one of these illnesses, please leave that information when you call in to report their absence, or call the Health Room and let one of the nurses know at 279-3815. Also, if you suspect that your student may have the flu, is running a fever or is vomiting and/ or has diarrhea please keep them at home to avoid spreading illness to other students and staff. Thank you so much. And remember, now is a great time to get your flu vaccination from your doctor’s office or pharmacy!

P.E./Health Department News
The P.E. Department would like to acknowledge the P.E. Student(s) of the month. They are chosen by their teacher not just by their athletic ability but because of who they are as an individual and how they demonstrate positive behaviors and leadership skills in class. This month’s recipients are: Freshmen – Linh Nguyen and Josh Kozub, Sophomores – Maya Glenn, John Manning, and Jake Ice, Junior – Jared LaPre, and Seniors – Franco Mercieri and Kate Salerno.
A big thank you goes out to the students from the Self Care Yoga and Mindful Living classes for their fundraising efforts to the New Hope School of Cambodia. This school was one that Ms. Melissa Doe (p.e. teacher) volunteered at this past summer. Many of the students at the New Hope School come from extreme poverty and are living with very limited resources. The students gathered up their thoughts and came up with the idea to do a collection. As well as collecting donations of money, our students wrote cards to them and brought in some pencils to share. This was a lovely way to show support for others in our world.
