Senior & Senior Parent Online Meeting
Locker Items and Art Projects
Any locker items not picked up by the end of this week will be thrown out.
Emails have been sent to students/parents who we know have items in the building. Since gym lockers are not assigned, we are unsure as to which items belong to what students.
Closure Dates
Health Mandate 013 – K-12 Public and Private Schools
The statewide school closure of all K-12 public and private schools is being extended from May 1, 2020 to the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Despite the need to extend school building closures, student learning will continue, per each school district’s individual plan, to provide distance-delivered educational services to students.
It is recognized that this difficult decision ends the school year with students physically separated from their teachers. Incident Command will reconvene later this month to consider whether the state’s health outlook will safely allow for small groups of students to meet with their teachers in-person for final student conferences before the end of the school year. This option, if allowed, will be dependent upon the coordination of each school district.
As school districts contemplate how to properly celebrate this year’s graduates, COVID-19 Health Mandate 011 - Social Distancing is still in effect, which prohibits gathering for events, such as graduation.
This mandate supersedes COVID-19 Health Mandate 008.
2nd Semester Finals Cancelled
Students and Parents of SMS and WHS:
In order to alleviate pressures during this time, there will be no Second Semester Final Exams held for SMS/WHS classes this year.
We will continue to deliver regular instruction for the rest of the school year. Please watch for updates on PowerSchool, email, and Google Classrooms and continue to let us know if you have any questions or concerns; we want to know how remote education is working for you and what improvements can be made.
GCI Internet
GCI has a program for free upgrades or free service if you don’t already have us if you are a K-12 student or staff. I encourage everyone who is eligible to sign up immediately by calling 1-800-800-4800.
GCI is waiving credit checks and deposits for Alaska K-12 students and teachers. Please provide Code: GCIGIVES2020 to receive this benefit.
For current Internet customers: Free internet plan upgrades →
For households without GCI Internet: Free entry level internet until May 31, 2020 →
Senior Project Update
- Portfolios are due to Trisa Rooney by 10:00 am May 4th. They can be emailed to her at trooney@wpsd.us
- Presentation to the Panel will be scheduled for May 5th and 6th.
- Be prepared to call in on Google hangouts to give your formal presentation to the panel.
Senior Parents
Despite the current situation, I would like to continue to create the graduation slideshow. Many parents still need to send me 5 pictures of their student and their 100-word letters. Please submit these to hhowe@wpsd.us ASAP. Thank you! Heather Howe
College Credit Classes Information
Students enrolled in UAS FT120 - Fisheries of Alaska had one additional week of "spring break" and started back up last week (March 23rd) with the rest of the UAS students. They will continue to learn through online lectures and distance delivery exams.
Woods and welding class grades for UAS have been finalized and students will receive full credit as we were able to complete the majority of required standards and hours.
ETT students will also receive full credit for the University and Wrangell High School as they had completed the required course material, hours and the written test. As the students were not able to complete the hands-on portion of the testing they can not at this time receive their Certification. Instructor, Chief Dorianne Sprehe is interested in exploring options for a review and testing at such time that the COVID 19 virus is contained. She will contact students at that time to make arrangements.
