Onerahi School 17 December 2021

Te Karere o te Tumuaki/Principal's Message

Nga Mihi o te Tau,

It is that bittersweet time of the year when we are all ready for a decent break and a rest, and the opportunities to reconnect with our whanau and friends in other parts of New Zealand. We also have to say goodbye to our fabulous group of year 6s, a few other students, and of course, some staff. Although it has been a different end of year celebrating awesome learners, it created an exciting opportunity to capture special events on video that we can go back to time and again and share with friends and whanau worldwide. There will be a lot of activity with works on school property over the holidays and the canopy and new playground equipment is due for installation early next year. We are looking forward to returning to some revamped areas of the school in 2022. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the contribution you have made to Onerahi School over the year and to your beautiful tamariki. Have a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Farewells/Haere Ra

Sadly, this time of year is always when we bid farewell to valued members of staff. This year, departing us for new challenges are Leon Candy - a popular member of our teaching team for several years and Garion Bowman, a valued teacher aide who has been with us for a number of years also. The boys are off on new adventures. We wish them all the best for 2022 and beyond. We also farewell Indira Harypursat and Glenys Westlake who have been teaching our New Entrants in rooms 21 and 20. As well as Emma Boustead who has been in Room 8 this term and Andrew Kent who has been learning with Room 2. And a big thanks to Rachel Martin who has been supporting release, 3 days a week . It may be goodbye for now but we look forward to seeing you again.

Ka Mau te Wehi

Our tamariki at Onerahi are amazing and we would like to thank both our students and whanau for the efforts they made this year. We would like to take this opportunity now to pass on our congratulations to all of the students who have earned that extra recognition this year.

Student Leaders in 2021 - We thank you

Our school has a number of leadership roles students willingly take on, that contribute to the smooth running of the school. We have Road Patrollers - who help keep our tamariki safe as they come and go from school each day, Peer Mediators who help resolve conflict among our students, Student Librarians who look after one of our most popular places - the library - during break times and Lego Club Co-Ordinators. Some of these students held multiple roles, well done team!

He Mahi Ataahua - Beautiful Work!

Well done Macy Waterhouse in Rm 1 for composing such a beautiful poem, in just 3 minutes! We are delighted you were happy to share it with us.

I am a fish

Have you have ever tasted me on a dish?

I swim in lakes

You could put me in cakes

Watch me swim very fast

Look at me I'm zooming past

Oh no, I'm dead

Now I'm lying in your bed

Message from the BOT

Kia ora whanau,

As 2021 draws to a close we can reflect on another very busy year, interrupted yet again by government restrictions and uncertainty. We are proud of our school community, for proving that our determination, collaboration and communication have seen us safely through a rocky 2021.

This year we have achieved many of our goals including going though a lengthy process to appoint our Principal AnnMaree MacGregor who has had a seamless transition from her role as Acting Principal for the previous 2.5 years. We have also welcomed a new board member Richard Pollard, through a by-election at the end of this year.

We would like to thank our students and their parents for their hard work and resilience. Your ability to keep going and get things done has been evident and has encouraged the staff at the school, this is why they do what they do, supporting our young people to become the best them that they can be.

Many of our projects have been delayed, we can see progress and look forward to have these completed early next year including the much needed canopy over the basketball court.

To our year 6 students who are leaving us at the end of 2021, we wish for you to continue the great work you have started at Onerahi Primary School - take this to your Intermediate school, and carry on. The world is your oyster, go find those pearls and if you can't find them... create them.

To all our students, families, teachers and staff; We wish you a happy and safe holiday season, we look forward to seeing you all again next year, stay safe on the roads and in the water.

Seasons Warmest

Onerahi School Board of Trustees

EOTC

As the year drew to a close, many of our staff and students made the most of opportunities to engage with our local community and resources to build their knowledge, and have a bit of fun. We had a group of year 4 students lucky enough to head out sailing for a 6 week programme, a Tuakana-Teina trip to Dragonfly Springs, two overnight experiences at our school for year 5 and 6 students, and trips down to the foreshore, the new Hundertwasser and more. What a great way to round out the year's learning.

Yummy Stickers

We'd like to give a big shout out to parents and children who collected Yummy Stickers.

Through your efforts Onerahi have been given $459 to spend on free sports gear. We'd like to remind you to keep collecting over the holidays as we keep collecting them all year. If you would like a sheet to put stickers on, pop into the office.

Important Dates

  • Tuesday 8 Feb 2022 - First day for students for Term 1
  • Thursday 14 April - Last day of Term 1

REMINDERS

Summer

It's certainly getting hotter! The sun can burn quickly and easily at this time of year and sunblock is encouraged. A reminder to all parents that in Term 1 and Term 4, hats are compulsory while our tamariki are outside. We would like all of these items to be clearly named so they can be returned to your children should they be left behind. Each term we do a last call for found property to be claimed or it is donated.
