ACTION PLAN

SPECIAL EDUCATION SUPPORTS FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS AT MCLENNAN P.S.

The key to success of any special education program is how well parents and professionals work together towards one common goal. It is very important for teachers to provide information to parents and for parents to do the same. By keeping parents informed about what their child is doing at school, teachers can create a relationship in which they feel free to contact parents for support if needed.

ENGAGEMENT

For parents and students- welcomed participation in assemblies, classroom activities or experiential units ensures parents can see first-hand what their child is learning. Parents can also access our online class newsletters and class websites

Active involvement where all are welcome- parents are encouraged to volunteer their time for special events inside and outside the classroom.

COMMUNICATION

Home and school- parent contact is initiated early in the year with newsletters, school information package, meet and greets, parent surveys, phone calls and meetings. There are many ways a parent can learn about their child's school system and classroom culture.

Students and the community- students learn the importance of the role they play in the community surrounding them and the support available for them. They see how valuable the members of the community can be for help with a multitude of issues or concerns.

SUPPORTS

Computer programs such as Padlet and WordQ, Google Read and Write, Premier Literacy,Kurzwell and Clicker5 as well as apps such as Evernote, Explain Everything, Quicknote, Mindmash are just some of the amazing specialized software available to support learning for students with reading, writing or communication challenges.
