Bring In 'Da Noise? End Up In A Funk?
The Library & Noise
More and more, libraries are becoming collaborative spaces for communities to gather, explore, learn and even play. This is how our library is often used and we love seeing students working together.
However, we also know that other students look to our library as a place for quiet study. It can sometimes be hard to balance both of those needs, especially since the library has the acoustics of a cave. For instance, conversations near the journals can sometimes be heard near the elevator. The library values the needs of both groups and hopes we can work together to meet as many people's needs as possible.
More people visit the library during boards, midterms and finals. With more people, comes more noise. We're not configured to have a dead silent library but with your help, especially during these exam periods, we can hopefully have a quieter library. So please keep the following tips in mind:
Study Rooms: These rooms might help block out some of the noise. They're meant for quiet study. Please, even if you're a group using the rooms, be cognizant of your noise level as noise can still travel through the HVAC systems connecting the rooms.
Headphones: The information desk offers both noise canceling headphones and regular headphones.
Library Classroom: If you are doing a computer project where you expect there will be some conversation, feel free to use the library classroom as long as there is no class or meeting scheduled in there (typically there will be a sign on the door). The room can hold multiple groups and the door can be closed if the groups get noisy.
Speak Up: Most people being too loud don't always hear their volume level and don't mean to be distracting. A simple "would you mind/is it possible to lower your voice?" usually works. Or a "do you mind taking the cell conversation out of the library?" Or you can come up to the front desk as it's happening and ask a librarian to intervene. We'll assess the situation and determine if it's too loud.
Creating a Brochure
If you already have a Word document, it's pretty easy to transfer the information into a Publisher document.
App Recommendations
3 and 1 Lab Values + Medical Reference: This is three apps in 1 app. You can find information on common lab values, medical prefix and suffix definitions and medical definitions in one handy app. The app also links out to more information on the internet. This is offered for $2.99 from iTunes and Google Play.
