Prendiville News
11 December 2019
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As Prendiville Catholic College year ends, it has certainly been a year with a difference. Challenging in many ways and joyous in others. In 2019, we have continued to seek ways to be a contemporary Catholic College in contemporary times.
The College yearbook, to be newly named 'The Prendivillian', captures our year in full. The vibrant magazine reflects a year of great activity, achievement and commitment of many in our College community. A new pastoral framework, two new Houses, Community time, Prendiville Time and increased opportunities for student voice echo throughout The Prendivillian.
There are many great moments in a school year and the yearbook has captured eight of the best:
A huge thank you to Mr Michael Nicholas, Mrs Stephanie Davies, Tracy David. Yvonne Burton and Dominique Pratt for their collaboration to create such a professional publication. The Prendivillian allows us to reflect on the year gone and, at this time of the year, my mind is also on the coming year. I will communicate to everyone in late January my 6th Community letter which will provide details of our focus areas for 2020. In short there will be:
1. Opening of the new Keller Tech Hub (refurbishment has begun)
2. Turning the soil to begin the construction of the Good Shepherd Centre at the front of the College. This centre will re-align the front of our College and will include a visitors reception and sign-in point, Uniform shop, four contemporary learning spaces and a Community Engagement and examination centre for use by our College, local community, neighboring community and parish.
3. Continued development for the College’s developing vision for learning in “growth through challenge”.
4. Consolidation of the Pastoral Framework
5. Development of the Parent Code of Conduct.
6. Development of the fifth College senior school pathway which will be an industry/university linked pathway.
7. At the system level the College will respond to the requirements of the Incorporation of CEWA from 1st January 2020. Please find attached a letter introducing parents to this significant change to the governance of Catholic Education Western Australia.
I take the opportunity to farewell staff who are leaving the College this year:
- Paul McAuley who has been a part of the College for 15 years as a Science teacher and pastoral leader. Paul is regarded as an exemplary teacher and a person who keeps students at the centre of all he does. Paul will go to Irene McCormack College.
- Marius Ndiaye has been an outstanding leader as Head of Physical Education for the past eight years. Marius will be moving to Sydney for family reasons where he will begin his new position as Head of Physical Education at Kamballa, Sydney.
- Yvonne Burton has walked every step of the way with Jayde Abbott as her Education Assistant. From Year 7 to recently graduating Jade this year, Yvonne has shown care and gentle guidance for Jayde who has excelled across all aspects of College life. Yvonne has been a committed staff member and has made a positive impact on our community.
- Beverly Reed will transfer to Chisholm Catholic College in 2020 after five years of visionary work developing our Learning Enhancement programs at the College.
- Renea Mayer will transfer to Seton Catholic College after four years at Prendiville. Renea has been a professional, diligent and contemporary educator as our Sport Coordinator at the College and has provided outstanding leadership.
- Margarita Tranquille will transfer to Catholic Education WA as a Curriculum Consultant after four years in various leadership roles at Prendiville. Margarita has played a major role in the transitioning to the College’s new Pastoral framework and she has been an exemplary practitioner in the classroom.
- Kate Raphael will transfer to Seton Catholic College to take on the role of Campus Minister. Kate has been significant in developing our College Retreat, Religious Education, Christian Service Learning programs and also House Program as House Leader of Chisholm House.
- Peter D’Amico will transfer to Chisholm Catholic College, his former school, after two years of teaching science at Prendiville. Peter is a positive and talented teacher who has inspired our students in the science learning area.
The following staff will leave the College after serving one year temporary contracts in 2020. Each has provided positive experiences for our students and have been committed community members.
- Viktor Gecas
- Alexis Tyson
- Josephine Storch
- Mat Tchan
- Jenna Knights
- Jon Barry
In addition, Susan Russell has been seconded to Aranmore College for 2020 to take on the role of Head of English for one year.
I would also like to acknowledge Ben MacNaughton who has been our Café Manager for the past five years, leading an amazing team who look after us all on a daily basis. We thank Ben and wish him well as he commences his new role in 2020 at Hale School.
I wish everyone in our Prendiville Community peace and joy over the Christmas period. Our College is inspired by the miracle of Christmas.

ITALIAN/ART STUDY TOUR
It’s been 18 months in the planning and finally, the day has arrived. On Saturday 7 December, 13 students fly to Italy for 15 days of art, language, culture and of course good food! The Year 10 and 11 students will spend the first five days in the north of Italy in Verona, the home of Romeo and Juliet. Here they will attend an Art and Language high school every day where they will be working on a joint project with the Italian students.
Once the work is done, it will be time for the 'touristy' stuff – four nights in Florence, one night in Orvieto and three nights in Rome. Students will visit the major art galleries of the Accademia and Uffizi in Florence with day trips to the medieval towns of Siena and San Gimignano. They will explore the ancient Etruscan civilisation in Orvieto then off to Rome for guided tours of the Colosseum, Vatican and Sistine Chapel, making sure to throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain as well. The Rome leg will also include a day trip to the amazing ruins of Pompeii.
Jealous? Stay tuned for details of the next trip in 2021 – you could be joining us.
Arrivederci, e Buon Natale a tutti.
Prof O’Donnell and Prof Amato.

YEAR 9 GEOSCIENCE INCURSION
Last Thursday, some of our Year 9's were lucky enough to enjoy a presentation from BHP’s Iron Ore Head of Geoscience, Dr. Vanessa Lickfold PhD.
Dr. Lickfold showed us many examples of rocks and minerals of interest plus gave a great summary of how iron ore was created throughout Earth’s 4.6 billion year old history. She also described her experiences of being underground at a depth of 3km!
Dr. Lickfold informed us of the many careers they could pursue with Geoscience, hopefully inspiring some of our students to consider becoming an engineering geologist, climate scientist, environmental lawyer or something even better!
