Letter from the Director
Dear AVID families,
I hope you are enjoying the weather as it finally starts to feel like spring outside. Inside MHS students are excited for the end of the year festivities including prom, graduation, and summer vacation. Although it seems close, there are still lots of important things happening between now and the end of the year, and it is important for all students, but especially our AVID students to finish the year strong. If students are struggling in classes, it is not too late to work with their teachers, the math lab, or the literacy center before and after school to get the extra help they need to reach success.
One of the most important events coming up shortly is Advanced Placement exams. While these tests can be difficult and long, it is an amazing opportunity for students to earn college credit. All state schools in Illinois are required to give students college credit for a score of 3, 4, or 5. Many AP teachers will be hosting review sessions during the next few weeks to help their students prepare. In addition, students and parents can purchase AP review books from Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobel to help students study. All families received a letter via mail with detailed information about AP testing locations, times, what to bring, and what not to bring on testing day. Please use the link to access a copy of the letter in English and Spanish: https://www.d120.org/academics/testing/ap/
In addition, we encourage ALL junior AVID students to take the SAT or ACT at least one, but ideally two times between now and the start of their senior year. As Juniors begin to determine their top 5 colleges, looking at the SAT/ACT requirements for scholarships can be a great way to help students set a goal to improve their scores. You can find testing dates pictured below for the summer and next school year. Please feel free to reach out to your student's AVID teacher with registration questions.
We hope you have a great weekend, and let's finish the year strong!!
Sincerely,
Melissa Schaefer
