Central Park East II Escuela Intermedia
Quienes somos?

CPE II Middle Schoolers as part of the Billion Oyster Project
Central Park East II Middle School
Who are we?
At the forefront, the CPE II Middle School is a continuation of the education our students received in the elementary grades. CPE II's mission is to provide progressive education to children in East Harlem, as well as to children in New York City. By challenging children through active exploration of content and by allowing them to develop at their own pace, we teach them to be critical and creative thinkers, readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, historians, activists, and artists. Furthermore, by emphasizing their place in the school community, as well as our school’s place in the civic community, we aim to instill in them the importance of taking part in society as a whole. We want our children to know that they can make a difference in the world.
Here at CPE II we implement the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching and learning, which fosters a safe, challenging, and joyful classroom environment for all students. This not only helps build community within the classroom and the school, but also helps students learn to be inclusive and accepting of all differences. We begin each day with a Morning Meeting , comprised of greetings, sharing, and activities that have helped us get to know each other better and build a classroom community in which all students feel safe enough to take the risks necessary for learning to happen.
School-wide practices (taking a break, logical consequences, community meeting) are also an important part of the Responsive Classroom work. In the middle school we continue to build a sense of community for children, as well as a sense of responsible independence.
What does 6th grade learning look like?
Math: We follow the Connected Mathematics 3 curriculum in our middle school, which emphasizes student investigations and real world application of mathematical thinking. We continue to deepen mathematics instruction with focus on how the mathematics community functions as an integral part of mathematics itself. We build routines and rituals in mathematics class that help students function as mathematicians: encouraging students to take risks, defending their ideas, convincing and be convinced of mathematical strategy and thinking, promoting the search for generalizations, and allowing reflection on themselves as mathematicians with respsonsibilities to themselves and their math community as a whole.
Humanities: Our humanities curriculum entails Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science. When Henry Hudson arrived on the island of Manhattan in 1609 — then called “Mannahatta” by the Lenape Indians — he found an island incredibly ecologically diverse. In our Welikia (Lenape for “my good home”) study this year, we dive into a study of Manhattan in its native state: the land, the people, the water, the species, etc. Through hands-on experiences, primary sources, and field trips, the students gain understanding of what this land — our good home — was like 500 years ago, how we know about the distant past, and how this knowledge can inspire the future of New York City, creating a more sustainable home.
Reading and Writing: We will continue our workshop models for ELA, balancing both fiction and non-fiction, allowing for small group work and conferencing. Students will read at their individually assessed levels, while engaging in whole-class book studies. Writing will continue to follow our writing cycle of planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, focusing on argumentative and literary essays, informational reports, and narrative memoir. Our literacy curriculum will be tied to our social studies and science work.
Social Studies and Science: Considering that the modern human footprint on Mannahatta has been relatively recent, how can we extend our existence here through measures of increased sustainability? In this on-going project, our students will build on the knowledge gained through our humanities study; combining it with our scientific study to design and test visions for a sustainable NYC. Our school has forged partnerships with scientific and cultural institutions in the city to make our science projects more authentic and meaningful. These grants and partnerships relate to our Welikia Study and will make explicit interdisciplinary connections between our scholarship and our school’s theme of activism. Our students will participate in the Billion Oysters Project with the Randall’s Island Park Alliance to learn, in the field, about oysters as a key-stone wetland species, as well as the potential for oysters to provide storm surge protection and help keep our waters clean. Our school is also a member of the 2015 Visionmaker NYC partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society, which educates our youth in urban ecology. With Visionmaker, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge about the historic interaction between humans and the environment with state-of-the-art 21st century technologies to imagine a NYC where ecologic performance enhances the lives and health of residents. With this partnership, our kids will have access to the Visionmaker simulation software, which will be used in conjunction with our humanities curriculum.
Work Time: We are dedicated to continuing our hands-on materials-based exploratory learning, with student choice, through our social studies, science, and art curriculum.
Socio-Emotional Learning: CPE II values socio-emotional learning as much as the academics. Students learn best in a safe and caring environment. Therefore, we will continue implementing the Responsive Classroom approach to classroom management and community building. CPE2 has received a significant grant from the Center for Compassionate Community (CCC) at Adelphi University to develop a comprehensive empathy-building program. We will also be supported by the 4 R’s Program – Reading, Writing, Respect, & Resolution, which integrates socio-emotional learning, conflict resolution skills and the language arts.
